Qantas stranded with stake in loss-making Fiji airline

QANTAS faces a tougher task finding a buyer for its 46 per cent stake in Air Pacific, after Fiji's national flag carrier slumped to the biggest annual loss in its 59-year history.

Air Pacific blamed the widening in losses to $F65.3 million ($38 million) for the year to March - from $F5.2 million a year earlier - on new competition, higher fuel costs and fuel-hedging losses.

The growing losses are likely to make it harder for Qantas to determine what is a fair price for its stake.

Could explain why their fares were so cheap (i.e. it wasn't just the downturn due to tense Australia-Fiji relations)

When referring to cheap fares, do you mean the NAN SC runs that a few people on here have done?

Yes :)

Even then, the fares themselves without trying weird stuff to garner SCs were very respectable compared to flights of similar length.

Given that FJ fly into LAX they might get more passengers if they agreed to post EQMs with AA rather than just redeemable miles. Or stated another way they became an affiliate member of OW rather than just permitted to be used on the Global Explorer fares.

I would be happy Oz-NAN in Y with NAN-LAX in J if I got EQMs with AA. That might not make QF happy.

But I wander

Fred

According to the Australian the losses of $F65.3 million were from revenues of
$F106.9 million. Something drastically wrong when your losses are two thirds of your revenue.

It's rumored Virgin will be pulling out of the route soon... May help things...

V Australia may pull out and let Pacific BLue have the route again, but I cant see the group pulling out of SYD-NAN all together.

Thats correct, the 777 and J class will not be a feature on that route moving forward.

Yes :)

Whats weird about BNE-NAN via MEL & SYD, some of us do prefer the 747 and will do our best to catch one ;)
