On the SFO airport guide Qantas advises "Passengers must check-in at least 3 hours before departure." Does anyone know if this is a strict rule? I have meetings beforehand and had planned to arrive 2.5 hour or 2 hours before departure for QF74 - does this mean I will not be able to check in? Three hours seems like overkill, even despite long TSA queues at times in US airports

I think you're probably best to ask Qantas about this.

If it had the word "recommended" in there, I would say it's not a strict rule. But "must" is quite clear. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

Qantas page for SFO says the check-in desk closes at 7:35 pm. Online check-in closes 2 hours before the departure. However, no mention about when the bag drop closes but one would think it needs to be open all the way to the end of the online check-in time window (so, in theory you could check-in en route to the airport and drop off the bag a minute later).

Note that this page hasn't been updated for over a year, and the Qantas flight timings have changed since then.
