Do you know if there is an exception to the 90min D-I at SYD for:

28 October
QF588, HBA-SYD, 0605-0805

On to
QF63, SYD-JNB, leaving at 0930

The HBA to SYD was just retimed from 0755 to 0805 taking it under 90mins

(Same ticket, in J)

No there’s not.

There’s only one inbound domestic flight that gets a blanket reduction - QF730 from ADL.

The only outbound international flights that get a reduction are a handful of 737 routes, and of course JNB is a widebody.

Hmmm annoying, thanks for the info though. They sent the updated ticket with new times but didn't 'reissue' the ticket as the date is still the same as when originally purchased.

Wondering whether I open the can of worms which means going up the night before (with 2 kids in tow).

Does anyone know if check in is an issue if under MCT even though a 'valid' ticket?

If you do not make that first flight from HBA -> SYD, that flight to JNB will be cancelled, as a no show.
If you had done a separate booking, earlier on, unlinked PNR, then its ok.
But with a linked PNR, you cant miss any begining sectors, it all has to follow the linkage, sad to say.

You will need to be at HBA airport very early, to do bag drop, and show passport to be swiped into their keyboard, so you do not need to do this at T1 in SYD.
At T1, as the D -> I bus drops you off, you just go through to outgoing int sec screening, and smartgate outgoing passport via the staffed gate.

If for some reason your HBA -> SYD flight is cancelled, by QF, then its up to them to deal with it.

Best not to leap frog it, ie, make your "own way up" to SYD, and not follow the line of the booking.

Wasn't planning on making my own way, was going to point out to them the ticket doesnt meet MCT and get them to put us on a flight the night before

Might (probably) work with a higher probability, if you contact them prior, not just turn up at the airport the day before and ask, which might or might not work.
Usually, when they change things, they would email you with options, either to accept the changes, or cancel the booking, ... when you get the email, or if you have already received the email, contact the call centre/centrer asap.

As detailed above, have ticket for:

28 October
QF588, HBA-SYD, 0605-0805
QF63, SYD-JNB, leaving at 0930
(3 pax, all in J)

Originally it was booked as HBA-SYD on QF1506 and arrived at 0755 so under the 90minute MCT

They have retimed/numbered the flight to arrive the 10 minutes later, breaching MCT by 5 mins, but resent the ticket to us showing the new flight/times, but it has not been reissued as the issued date is the original booking date.

Will this cause any issue at check in for QF588 as it is less than MCT? And hence should I contact to get rebooked to the night before instead

I wouldn't be comfortable with that connection. Ring up and ask for the night before.

I doubt that it will cause issues at check in, but that is not really the point here. When you have connections on the one ticket like this, you are "protected" in that the airline needs to look after you if you misconnect due to delays on the incoming leg and the like. They don't really care about your convenience, but it costs them money - especially if they have to pay for accommodation and the like. To mitigate this, they set the MCT so that tickets are not issued that fail to meet what they consider adequate time to mitigate their risk (not yours). This takes into account transfer times (for you and luggage), likelihood of incoming delays etc. This is why the MCT has so many variations.

One the ticket is issued, it is issued and subsequent delays are not going to affect it. If your flight is delayed leaving, that eats into the time as well.

The real consideration is what you want to do to mitigate your risk - not the airline risk. Many here consider MCT to be far less than what they are comfortable with, and book longer connections to avoid stress, and have more confidence.

In agreement with most here, I would be getting on to them to get it changed - they won't be chasing you about it.
