Hi All,

Thinking of flying in J, QF93/QF11 MEL-LAX-JFK, with no stopover.
Just tried to use the Qantas Points/SC Calculator online, and if I enter MEL-JFK, it shows 280SC, but if I put in MEL-LAX, LAX-JFK it shows 260SC.

Does anyone know which of these will apply to my situation?

Thanks for your help.
Cheers, MrMNJ

Thanks samh004, I initially thought so too, but then I realised there is no MEL-JFK as such, only SYD-JFK (QF11).
In other scenarios, if the route does not exist, then it won't come up as an option on the calculator.
QFF customer service could not help me with this question. Only suggested that it may have to do with a stopover leading to less SCs, but he was not sure.

As you're booked on two separate flight numbers you'll earn points and status credits for the two flights separately. This means 180 SC for MEL-LAX and 80 SC for LAX-JFK, or 260 in total.

As it happens, the direct SYD-JFK flight (on the same flight number all the way) would earn 280, or 20 SC more due to an anomaly in the earning table. If there was a direct MEL-JFK flight then it would also earn 280 based on the earning table but this flight doesn't exist. I don't think the calculator on the QF website picked up on the fact that you'll have to change planes in Los Angeles if departing from MEL.

Can you instead fly MEL-SYD-LAX-JFK (QF11)? An earlier start ex MEL, but an extra 60 Status Credits and a few thousand points....

Thanks samh004 and MattG - much appreciated. Aus ATC, I'll look into the MEL-SYD-LAX-JFK QF11 option as this seems a relatively painless way to get what I need.
Cheers!

The calculator seems to work reasonably well for direct flights, hence the difficulty I think with MXP-DFW which is not direct. :(

But perhaps RedRoo can pass another "overlooked" item to the "calculator team".

American Airlines is now offering code share flights on JL from TYO to USA destinations. Along with that they are now selling tickets in W class (and you sit in the JL premium Y cabin). The online calculator only shows economy and business for those routes. No discount versus full economy either.

How many SC for an AA code share on JL metal between NRT and DFW?

Happy wandering

Fred

That'd be great. MIA is actually key when flying DFW-MXP and MXP-DFW. In my case I joining the journey in DFW which I think is the first place. I then fly from DFW to MIA, all disembark and change plains, drop off those passengers just heading to MIA and uphold those passengers who are off to MXP with the rest of. So there's a plan change but not a flight number: DFW-MIA and MIA-MXP, despite their crews and planes and catering changes, the fact is if get on in DFW and your stop at MIA means nothing; you'll be flying DFW-MXP.

Now most of the above where all pretty well aware of. But to bring it around to the topic of the thread, the AA calculator doesn't provide an earning for DFW-MXP. There's the bug I see. Maybe some others don't see it that way.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I was struggling with this anomaly as well, however, I think you'll find that from 1 December 2015, the JFK-LAX (LAX-JFK) sector in J will attract 100 SC's (as opposed to current 80 SC's) - reverting to the good old "pre fairer" days of a few years ago. That's what the calculator is suggesting anyway - I haven't seen any announcement.

That is correct, this was snuck into the most recent changes to Qantas' Simpler and Fairer earnings when partner earnings changed. I could never understand how you could earn less just because you left from a different airport. Now you can take the most convenient flight without having to worry about reduced sc and points earn.
