Qantas safety under fire after fake engineer discovered

HUNDREDS of thousands of lives have been put in danger by an unqualified Qantas mechanical engineer who conducted safety checks on more than 1000 international flights in the past year without having a licence to do so.

The "imposter" engineer based at Sydney airport is being investigated by the Australian Federal Police after allegedly forging his licensed aircraft maintenance engineers licence without having passed the required Civil Aviation Safety Authority examinations.

And amazingly the Union Rep goes on the attack against Qantas

"He called the union claiming the licences were genuine and asked to be represented so we've asked him to provide evidence of that but we haven't heard from him since," ALAEA's federal secretary Steve Purvinas said yesterday.

Mr Purvinas said it was the responsibility of Qantas to check its employees were qualified to sign off on aircraft.

"That this guy has slipped through the system highlights a pretty serious breakdown in the Qantas system of maintenance to allow this to happen," he said.

Bizarrely I agree with the Union rep - it is a pretty flawed recruitment process if something a critical as this is not verified not just to the source document but also to an industry database is available.

Fake Qantas engineer gives reference from Bill Heffernan

A SELF-confessed pathological liar who faked qualifications to become a Qantas maintenance worker has handed to court a reference purportedly from Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan.

The reference was produced in court today after it was found Timothy Leslie McCormack's four previous references were bogus, The Daily Telegraph reports.
