Do you mean an operational upgrade? Or an upgrade which has required points/dollars? I'm sure the former has happened (but not to me), but am equally sure it is quite rare (but not unheard of). The latter would probably require a signficant exchange of points/dollars, in the airline's favour.

At 60,000 points to upgrade from prem economy to business SYD-LHR I think that is a pretty good use of them.

I did that and it was a pretty good use of them. Not looking forward to my return in Y on BA :/

Wholeheartedly agree! :) I guess my post may have come come across a little negative, but I'm all for upgrading with points on longer flights where possible. I'm unsure whether that could happen at checkin though, as per the OP's question.

Yes, for a heavily oversold flight to a Chairman's lounge and the odd platinum...not that uncommon. Extremely uncommon/non-existent lower tiers.

We were upgraded to Business at the boarding desk on a flight from Singapore to Perth, on tickets that we had redeemed for economy Frequent flyer points! bargain!

I showed my boarding pass first, and heard a ping. I got worried, my husband, whom I think was platinum at the time, just smiled. He knew what it meant!

I am looking at upgrading my sons and husband's flight from Singapore to Adelaide in January. 48000 points from economy to Business which I think it pretty good.

How popular is the Sydney - Bangkok leg on QF1? Is it worth buying a PE ticket and going in the upgrade lottery to J for 25,000 points (i am gold FF) Or should i fly JQ and get the business status credits if the upgrade isnt likely?

Anyone have much success on this route?

I'm thinking of the Y+ to J upgrade as well. Will buy a Y+ fare and upgrade via points.
Newby question but; if I do that, do I get all the advantages and features of J, as if I had bought a J ticket? Not a QF Club member so doubt I will get in the lounge but are all other perks available?

If you do a points upgrade you will get a J boarding pass at check-in and you can go in the lounge. For the rest you will get the whole J experience
