VH-OJA will be going to HARS at Wollongong but the runway is 100m shorter than LRE and the -400 needs more than EBQ did. So there's some work to be done. A few weeks expected.

Just for a visit or a more permanent attraction?

It will be a one way trip, runway won't support a takeoff without removal of 100 houses and a few million dollars of civil works.

How can they get around that then? Sand pit at the end of the runway?
Seriously though, would they have to extend it somehow ( couldn't be cost effective?)?

Attached is a photo I took coming in to land at the Illawarra airport where HARS is. To be honest, there would be room at the end of both runways but I'm not sure they could justify the cost of expanding them just for this?

I believer they'd just have to lighten the load. Obviously there's more to it than that, but some points:

  • The 747-400 requires more runway than the 747-200 at LRE
  • The runway is 100m shorter than at LRE
  • The 747-200 at LRE had fuel to get from SYD-LRE, make 2 attempts to land and then fly all the way back to SYD, plus it had been "lightened"
  • SYD-Wollongong is a little shorter, so despite it requiring more runway and being heavier, the lessons they've learnt and the removal of weight shouldn't be too bad

That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure it's more complex though.

Should be an interesting landing at Wollongong when it happens

Did you get an estimate of when the hoped to make the move?

The guy I spoke with said a few weeks of planning. I don't know if that means for Christmas, or early-Jan.

That is too funny. People all over Australia are going to wonder about this JohnK fellow. ;)

There were a lot of comments on the undercarriage doors. I took a photo a little later on I'll try remember to move off my camera ;)
