Qantas - new SYD-AKL-YYZ 787 service rumours

If QF were to go to ORD, would the 787 have the range to do SYD-ORD non-stop in the eastbound direction (about 200 miles longer than LHR-PER)? And if so, do you think they would do what they did when they initiated 744-ER services to DFW, non-stop outbound, but via BNE on return? Or was that a failure?

You are all forgetting - no new QF routes until I get my daily QF MEL-CAI flights🤣

The A330 is arguably more comfortable in Y with its 2-4-2 layout but of course this being AFF we'd all prefer to avoid Y where possible 😁
I don't think that there is even an argument there - I try to avoid the 787's where possible!

It's not really an upgrade, is it.
Downgrade if you are in Y

Australia, NZ and Canada have the same head of state in Charles III; and SYD, AKL and YYZ are the largest cities in those countries respectively. All three countries share plenty of cultural and societal similarities and have strong people to people and economic links. I reckon this rumoured service could build on that and propel agreements like CANZUK into reality as well.

Umm well, ok. That criteria could apply to many many possible new routes :)

What Qantas typically targets with long haul is premium leisure heavy or premium business/corporate heavy routes. They have very premium dense configurations.

So I guess the question is (and I have no idea) is how does Toronto stack up from that perspective? I wasn’t aware of a huge corporate demand/links there?

This thread had been reading a bit like a “Source: trust me bro”, but now it’s even lost that credibility… 🤪

Isn’t Toronto the largest financial centre in Canada and YYZ the second busiest airport in NA after JFK? It does make sense that it is a corporate/premium heavy route. Qantas also did fly to Toronto a while ago, not sure if it was via New Zealand, probably not, but Toronto was their original Canadian destination before YVR iirc

What has changed since COVID to make something like SYD-AKL-YYZ more viable than what was originally planned (ie BNE-ORD)?
Well, clearly something has changed with how Qantas views the Canadian market.

Pre-Covid SYD-YVR (Qantas’ only Canadian destination) was only a seasonal ‘leisure’ service similar to PER-FCO, now it’s a regular flight on their flagship aircraft. Perhaps all part of a new perspective on Canada that didn’t exist pre-Covid.

I cant see this route being viable either, YYZ is not a big destination for AU passengers, but i would prefer increase YVR service more instead then connect to the east.

Toronto seems to be more of an inbound destination rather than outbound (i.e less Aussies travelling to YYZ), however I'm sure however any of the large southern states with their Airports (SACL or MEL-APA) could dig up their aviation fund money in the name of Canadian "inbound tourism" if they are willing to have a 'direct link' between their cities and YYZ.

Also consider the NZ factor since the rumoured service stops at AKL.

If I had to pick a reason why this might even be contemplated (even if only for 5 seconds), there is obviously major Canadian pension fund investment in Australia which has increased in recent years. You could also add Brookfield into that group as another significant Canadian investor into Australia. Many of those pension funds and Brookfield are HQ’ed in Toronto.

In saying that, I cannot imagine that link alone would be a significant enough driver for this type of service without a few other compelling reasons.

My mind went straight to mining. Australian miners with investments in Canada. Canadian miners with investments in Australia. A relative (in mining) made three trips to YYZ HQ last year (from MEL).
