Finally, a good news story about Qantas.

Qantas has been named the world's safest airline, after a year when fatal air accidents soared above the 10-year average.

In a report published by AirlineRatings.com on Tuesday night, Qantas was lauded for amassing "an extraordinary record of firsts" in safety and operations over its 94-year history.

<snip>

Qantas, which has a fatality-free record in the jet era, was described as a leader in the development of an avionics system that provides a direct data link communication between the pilot and the air traffic controller, as well as the development of flight data recorders to monitor plane and crew performance.

Also, FWIW, good to hear that Jetstar appears as the highest rated LCC in the part of the world in which it operates (and globally no 4. behind Aer Lingus, Alaska and Icelandair).

Thanks for pointing this out. :)

At last a list that makes common sense!

I didn't realise Alaska Airlines and Icelandair were LCCs though. That list is is also good to know.

Saw the headline and guessed Geoffery Thomas.

Followed the links and sure enough...

Re: QF worlds safest airline

That list also has Singapore in the top ten, and I would never fly them personally (they've had fatalities, but that's not the reason).

So what is the reason? (Just curious, as you have made the point without explanation.)

Re: QF worlds safest airline

Worth pointing out that while there is a whole bunch of criteria that put QF and the top 10 where they are, there's also a lot of other airlines with a full 7/7 score. These include carriers such as Air China which may be just outside the top 10. Worth checking your intended airline to see if they have the 7/7. (Air France for example gets 6/7)

As does TK. (6/7, that is.) Hmmm.

It's worth noting that Mr Thomas has no qualifications or experience within the industry (his only job has been as a baggage handler) and has limited respect within the aviation community.

I can't say it says a great deal for a "journalist" to quote a website that they run as a reliable source

He's also responsible for a lot of the stories that talk up qantas. Every time I see a headline talking them up I play "guess if it's Geoffrey Thomas" ... He's kind of the anti Ben Sandilands who tends to cut Qantas no slack.

Thomas has never seen something qantas did that he didn't like. :)
