Did she lodge a report with baggage services at SYD before leaving the airport?

Went to BNE and didn't notice lock missing till returned home.

Have lodged complaints with both QF and EK. But it's a waste of energy unfortunately.

Baggage handlers are insufficiently monitored. Hard to believe in this day of over zealous passenger security and banning laptops that baggage handlers can grab a bag, open it and rifle the contents without being observed and caught. So easy to add things as to take them out.

MrsTMA flew back from LHR on QF2/EK434 this week and one of her checked luggage suitcases had lock cut off and contents rifled. Lock was left inside the case afterwards.

Difficult to say where it happened at Heathrow or DXB.

Theory is that it went through X-ray and they saw a number of leather wallets. Case was opened and each wallet was opened and searched for contents, plus folder of documents and receipts was also disturbed.

We don't think anything as stolen.

Not acceptable.

Sorry, not having a go, but why "not acceptable"? Sounds like a legitimate search (albeit careless) if the lock was put back inside the case. And wouldn't it be government security / customs rather than the airline, if legitimate?

I assume the authorities may always go through my checked bag and I wouldn't expect them to be neat about it, as it would be a push aside type of look, rather than an unpack and repack.

ps a tip if you don't already do so: As you pack, take a phone picture of it every 'layer'. Great as an aide memoir recalling things which may be stolen, and supporting evidence for insurance claim.

If it was security then they should have left a note. And would be legally obliged to otherwise it's theft and criminal damage.

We always photograph luggage after having cases rifled in DXB twice before.

There is a lot to be said for cable ties

I have to fly with camera equipment a fair bit and have taken to at least using cable ties ontop on the TSA locks. Mostly because I've had a number of TSA locks pop off when I'm pretty certain there was no tampering. The best way to go for Pelican style cases is i find, is a couple of wraps of fragile tape. Not that it's actually that fragile but the tape makes it a bit harder to get into while giving you a super easy visual queue for tampering.
