This is no different to many other corporates - taking the opportunity now to take action that at other times would be blocked by the majority. Hopefully this makes QF a leaner and stronger organisation in the long run.

Very sad for people losing their jobs but hopefully the economy will start to swing in the short term.

I find it interesting this piece came out today and tonight the Qantas site was down for a few hours either side of midnight.

I didn't think Qantas had many IT people in Australia once they outsourced lots of things... I'm surprised they managed to find 240 jobs that they could axe!

IT industry in Australia isn't really hiring too much at the moment, so I do hope they find new jobs soon.

Qantas web sites used not to be run or hosted by Qantas, not sure if this is still the case.

Anyway i thought they still had lots of IT here just outsources there desktop support and there mainframe stuff. That still leaves all the other systems and storage etc, a not insignificant amount.

In any case 240 must be somehow feild service people, i can't imagine QF even had 240 in the backend ?? Maybe the companies of similar size or larger i work for a lot more lean.

It is sad to see people losing jobs but let's face it the IT market has been very poor in the last few years and no sign of a recovery in the immediate future especially in specialist areas like RPG ILE. Why should Qantas be any different?

And this is just another example of how the global financial crisis affects different companies. The company I work for will be hiring 3 more IT developers and hire 4 new people through the graduate program.
