Qantas Hotels booking ref

I have used Qantas Hotels quite a few times now and successfully got the points post stay.
I am a bit confused though re booking references .
I am emailed a qantas hotel booking number when i make the booking but if i am staying at a big chain hotel - eg Marriott , the checkin staff sometimes seem a bit flumoxed by me not having a marriott reservation number.It has always been sorted out though.
Is there a separate number for the hotel itself or the qantas number is good enough for them?

Why do you need reference number. Usually they can check with Name and Checkin date.
Alternatively you can get a hotel reference number - just contact them and ask them for one - they will ask you to give them you Name and Checkin Date.

If you check the hotel booking in the qantas app, it will show both the hotel reference and the QF ref when you look at the detail.

I have checked 2 previous QF hotel reservations and can find only the qantas booking reference ( Wyndham and Holiday Inn).
I ask the question because i am staying at 2 hotels in the USA next year to attend meetings.
Both conferences offer a usd 100 off the registration if attendee is staying at the conference hotel and both need to provide that hotels booking reference to prove their stay.
Is this a way to cut back on using hotel brokers ?
