Hi All,

I am travelling to the USA in Economy. Looking at the Qantas website I understand the luggage allowance is 2x 23kg pieces per person. If a piece of luggage exceeds 23kg it will be subject to a heavy charge (of AU$85 to the USA, and then US$85 from the USA).

Is that heavy charge a flat rate, or per kg over the 23kg limit per piece (up to the 32kg maximum limit for a single piece of luggage)? For example, if a piece of luggage is 30kg are you subject to a heavy charge of $85…or would it be $595 (7kg overage x $85)?

I emailed Qantas and haven't heard back, so thought best to consult the Brains Trust here :)

Thanks in advance.

Good question. I suspect it's a single charge for baggage between 23kg and 32kg. However, you might like to try to engage the chat function on the website or SMS. If you get the answer you want, definitely get a copy of the transcript in the case of the chat and don't delete the SMS message if taking that route.

Thanks for your reply. I contacted Qantas via SMS and they confirmed the heavy charge is indeed a single charge of $85, not per kilogram.
