Qantas group to cut all International routes and stand down two thirds of its staff

I say this tongue in cheek given the severity of the situation and the fact that these are peoples lives and livelihoods but...

yes, you can expect the very best of Qantas service on your next Woolworths visit 😱
Not a lot of QF employees are 'young' like supermarket staff are (as in under 18), will be quite interesting to see if they actually do employee a few Qantas staff!

They are hiring a lot. A lot of employees have received offers with start dates.

They deserve full points for this.

Can we hope for in store service?
I agree!
Woolworths instore Service at POS has significantly gone down hill in recent years, it’s literally non-existent , in the inner city Melbourne stores I frequent.
Qantas staff, are in for a bit of a rude shock, I suspect between the customer service training standards between the two companies.

And for *some* Qantas staff the shock will be in a different way than you might be indicating. Some might actually start to appreciate their job and bring back a better attitude :(

That is if the jobs are available for all the retrenched staff * if and when* QF comes back to full capacity, which looks extremely unlikely in the short term.

Probably not until a vaccine is available - so 12 months or so? Plus lead in time.

But depends how airlines respond. If they've issued vouchers they may have little or no incentive to put on large panes when they could make almost as much out of a 787 :(

Qantas denies sick leave to ground staff

While this might be legal it sucks that staff on long term sick leave for serious conditions can no longer access this leave element.

I think everyone understands QF lack of cash but maybe they could have continued to cover people in this situation (from before grounding) by not issuing them a notice that they don’t currently have a job.

Losing pay when healthy is devastating but add in serious medical issues as well and it could be overwhelming. QF must be desperate to do this to those in this situation prior to shutdowns (I understand not covering new or short term sick leave).

A stand down is a stand down.
It sucks the same for staff with no annual leave for example.

Otherwise Qantas would just have employees using sick leave during the stand down.

I understand that but I think there is a difference between those on chemotherapy for last few months and those getting sick after the shutdown, I understand some wouldn’t see the difference as sick is sick but long term serious illness is different to me than a 1 or 2 day cold. Qantas decided who to stand down, it wasn’t everyone.

It sucks for those without annual leave I agree but they aren’t facing long term health issues right now so I argued they are slightly better off (can you imagine being unwell with something that isn’t COVID-19 right now?)

As a former rehabilitation case manager I recall what it meant to people in these long term situations when they run out of paid leave (which is all the employer has to cover), right now these people have sick leave but are cutout. Not everyone is in the same position and there won’t be many in this situation but it would show some compassion if they could be looked after.

QF has decided to do the easier uniform option that is their choice and QF must be in terrible situation to through long term sick staff (noting only a few) out to social security net (which to be fair is better than most countries).

They can do it, they have done it. No saying they have done anything legally wrong just disappointing.

There will be treatment available before a vaccine I can almost guarantee it. Rapid diagnostics, treatment, vaccine. In that order.

It is harsh. But i wonder if income protection, which can be deducted from super, will kick in to cover these circumstances?

That’s true too. But would i go to america, where my TI will almost certainly not cover it? Maybe if the treatment becomes semi over-the-counter and all I need to do is visit the local urgent care (I think my last bill for a 15 minute consult was ‘just’ USD225j. If i needed to pay for a test, then treatment in a hospital I couldn’t - or rather wouldn’t ‘want’ - to pay for that.

Now if the USA govt offered to cover all covid expenses to generate tourism... that would change things.

Euopre, fine, covered by reciprocal medicare in 11 countries. Asia can self insure.

Very good point. Hopefully QF and help them quickly apply for that option and it can be fast tracked. I’ll mention this to people I know.

Applaud Woolies as long as they don't bring NP across as well!!!!!

Before we go patting Woolies on the head too much step back a bit.

1) They are getting very well trained customer service staff.
2) Paying them very little.
3) Getting them really quickly to face an unprecedented surge in demand and revenue pouring in and...
4) Making BUCKETLOADS of money in the process

I can guarantee you if Coles and Woolies weren’t swimming in cash from panic hoarders and desperate to plug holes in their business they would be doing sweet NOTHING to help these staff.

So yes its a good headline.

Great PR for Woolies though. Still only shop there as last resort.

Where are they storing all their aircraft? There's a number going to AVV and some using the hangers in SYD...
It appears that OQH went to LAX last week as QF6001 and hasn't flown since. Being stored in the LAX hanger?
