I have read on the web ''You should gate check your guitars to make sure they get on the same flight, and don't get damaged''

Is this possible with Qantas airlines?

Last time I travelled with them they wouldn't let me.

I'm not sure that UTR's attitude is really necessary.

QF have generous allowances for musicians who are members of a number of associations such as APRA/AMCOS etc.
No gate check however in a hard case and taken to special handling/oversize luggage counter, it should survive the trip relatively unscathed. Check it in at the normal counter first then you take it to oversize yourself.
On some international flights in premium cabins (business or first) these can be taken onboard with the airline's permission.
