From 01 May 2009, fuel surcharges on trans-Tasman services will be incorporated in the fare instead of in the fees and charges. The current fuel surcharge for flights ex-Australia is $30 AUD and ex-New Zealand is $40 NZD. The total cost to the customer will not change.

Wonder if that means that Frequent Flyer tickets will now be $30 cheaper AU->NZ...

This is good news!

Although the courts may have ruled against the class action from the TA's, it seems to be having an effect.

The courts did rule that the way in which surcharges were included under taxes/levies/charges was deceptive.

Assuming the fuel surcharge is removed from award tickets to/from NZ then award tickets will start to look more attractive.

Of course, QANTAS could decide to rerate the burn rates for awards to factor this in, making the benefit moot.

Sure under normal circumstances that would be a real possibility but I think Qantas would be sitting quietly at the moment not attempting any changes likely to stir trouble.
