I’ve had luck with something similar once. Upgraded but they never took the points, flew in the said cabin. It’s been a few years they have not come knocking yet.

I have cancelled two classic rewards last year, they also didn’t apply the penalty.

Probably just second rate IT systems at play.

Jetstar had a thing where you could upgrade to a flex fare the cancel for the refund which also refunded the change fees etc. That loophole or coughpy IT issue seems to have been fixed.
