Qantas flight change ... refund?

I have one ticket with Qantas that includes two flights. The first leg is Melbourne to LAX and then on to JFK. Again, this is all on one ticket.

Qantas changed my Melb to LAX flight to be almost an hour later, which has not left me with enough time to catch my LAX to JFK flight.

I contacted them about this and they suggested I be transferred to another flight, which was also questionable in terms of allowing adequate time to clear customs at LAX and get to my next flight. I did not confirm that I wanted to be put on this flight. I told them that it is impossible for me to leave Melbourne any earlier OR arrive in New York any later, hence why I booked the original flight I did in the first place.

I have now checked their website and both my initial flight and the suggested one by them are sold out with no seats available.

Am I within my rights to request a refund?

What's the issue with not being able to arrive in JFK any later than planned? I wouldn't be wanting to schedule anything important in New York the day of arrival just in case of any unforseen delays that may occur.

AA mostly have flights every hour on the hour LAX/JFK 0700, 0800, 0900 etc up until 1200 noon so I don't see why QF couldn't move you to the next AA flight giving you the minimum connecting time of 2 hours from the new later arrival time in LAX.

If you are going to proceed down the road with requesting a refund from QF I would first make certain that you can book flights on an alternative airline that suits your timeframe because you don't want to regret cancelling your QF flights & they still end up being the best option.

Not sure what date you're travelling on however VA will be withdrawing their non-stop MEL/LAX flights after 25 October 2014 but you can still connect via SYD or BNE. If you want another non-stop MEL/LAX flight your only option will be United.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Hourly AA flights, I'd take the shorter MCT and have a go at making it, knowing if that fails that I could bump onto the next hourly flight. No real stress, and have done this before with those results. Never stress about a short MCT when lots of connections are available.
