hi,

I have got a flight booked in June with Qantas, and I need to cancel it for work reasons.

The only way Qantas can cancel it, is by issuing me with a voucher to be used within 1 year.

I would prefer to have it refunded onto my credit card.

So if I upgrade my flight to a higher fare that allow cancellations and refund. Do you think that would work?

Let say Im booked in economy now, I ring them today and upgrade to business, and then tomorrow I ring them and ask for a refund....
:D

If you change your fare, the new fare inherits the fare conditions of your base fare.

So you can't just upgrade to a fully flexible or Business ticket and refund it.

You might have no choice but to take the voucher and use it against an equal or higher fare in the future.

Thanks for your answer, I thought it was too easy... :(

I haqd this as well which meant I flew a return to HBA for AUD700  instead of around AUD400 red edeal at the moment whilst that fare was available...
Annoying thing as well is that it has to be equal or higher, if another fare you want is 20 dollars less they won't book it and you have to go to a higher fare

do you have any status with Qantas?

this happened to me as flights booked for the same day were booked twice (at different flight times) by my PA and myself separetely- as WP+PG I rang the premium line and asked about the mistake and was able to have one of the sets of flights reversed altogether and fully refunded - which is much easier than trying to use credit vouchers

this was excellent customer service on Qantas's part :D

I would have thought that workplaces requesting employees change personal travel plans would normally be prepared to pay for the cost of those changes. If you can't get the cash back from QF then I'd be asking the Boss to foot the entire out of pocket expense.

Daaamn, who do you work for!? Certainly not the same employers that I have!

Whats the route?

If Qantas reschedule the flight then you are entitled to a full refund, so given there's no rush to cancel for a credit voucher, just sit tight and see if the "flights have changed" email comes.

I've had this done a couple of times - once with points, and once on a Red E-deal.

As long as they haven't ticketed the flights, then they can cancel and refund easily. If booked through a TA, the ticketing usually seems to take a lot longer (I think they often hold it until the end of the day), but if booked online with QF, the ticketing can be quite fast (the cheaper the fare, the faster from my experience) so with this sort of thing the quicker you can get on the phone the better.

You are referring to asking the credit card company for a chargeback with the reason that QF have broken carriage contract?

No. If you get the "your flights have changed" email, you don't have to press "I Accept".

You can call up, and if you don't like the new flight times, you can change to another flight or get a refund without penalty.

It is true. Actually cancelled a flight this morning because of a 45 minute change. Given I am always travelling with domestic connections, I find that my flights frequently change and if they're not suitable (which unfortunatley happens a few times), I've never had any objections to having the ticket refunded (and usually within 72 hours as well).
