Can anyone answer me a couple of newbie questions please:

- I am flying Sydney to Melbourne on monday morning, and likely returning tues evening; but this may change.
- If i book the return flight as a flex fare for tues evening and my plans change, can I just rock up say on monday evening and change this flight to fly back monday?

Trying to work out the best thing to do. It's a business trip, so the additional cost of the flex fare isn't an issue - I just want to ensure I have true flexibility and can turn up to the airport anytime prior to the booked return leg and get on an earlier flight!

Thanks!

if it's not the day of travel you'd most likely need to chnge the booking online, via the website or app (or call QF, though they may chrge a fee for this). On day of travel you should be able to go to the airport. You MAY be allowed to change to an earlier flight - either the kiosk or an an agent can help. However note that it may well depend on availability and the specific fare class/conditions of your original booking. As in if you have a M fare, and only Y is available you may be out of luck. Airport Agents can override this in specific cirtumstances.

In practice, you should just be able to change the booking assuming availability but I would not go direct to the airport except on day of booked travel(ie: Tues). I think if you showed up on the Monday at SYD the agents would be obliged to charge a service fee (yes seriously!) but they could also waive at discretion.

Jeez, it's not simple is it? I used to hold platinum with Virgin and the fly ahead perk was awesome - I just rocked up to airport and jumped on earlier flight, no matter what ticket I was on!

Anyway, in this situation, I am wondering if it's worth just not booking my return until I know - as the price of a flex ticket at $460 (ouch) doesn't seem worth the money!

What would you do?!

It would probably be easier and cheaper to just book your flight once you know which day.

tbh I am not 100% sure that you can't rock up on say the Monday with a Tuesday ticket and they would switch you but it seems unlikely (and as I noted before probably charge an airport service fee for the pleasure). At least day of travel it's very common to finish meetings(or whatever) earlier and try to get on an earlier departure, and QF are pretty good with flex tickets on this score.
