Morning from a chilly Canberra,
I've been monitoring the Qantas Facebook page recently and have noticed more and more what I consider to be creepy responses to posts by females. They usually ask for a friend request to be sent or for a DM to ask a confidential question. You can see what I mean by looking at the latest posts on the last Qantas article about naming the new planes. My suspicious mind says these responders are trying to scam or trying to befriend females and then scam them. Hopefully I am wrong and there is an innocent explanation. I have reported a number of them to Facebook and also asked Qantas if they monitor this type of post on their Facebook site. Hopefully the ladies who get these responses will just ignore them and block the senders.
Has anyone else notice this type of post?

The Qantas Facebook page is public and the people responding to these questions do not work for or have any affiliation with Qantas.
I’m not sure what if anything QF would do about creeps responding asking for DMs
Every single public Facebook page including the Daily Fail etc has the same creeps harassing others.

yes I guess you are correct. I don't use Facebook much so haven't checked other sites. I did notice one of the ladies replied to the creepy post and when I checked a couple of the profiles of the "creeps" they didn't seem right.

sadly these are everywhere as PF says - be they stalker types or just scammers.. or even plain old lonely people out there.

tbh I avoid the QF public pages (and others) as usually the trolls and haters outnumber anyone offering anything reasonably useful or interesting unfortunately. Those sorts also appear on a news post with the same old rubbish.. eg: a post about QF wanting suggestions for A220 names get racist comments about Alan Joyce, or "never fly QF" or "hope my bag arrives too" and so on. The usual sort of thing that really has no place... but... it's the internet. just look for any aviation post about an airline deploying or ordering a 737 MAX, and you'll get the plethora of "deathtrap" comments or "I'll never fly ever on one" - usually from an uninformed moron who probably would set foot on one if the price was right, and likely not even know it.

Anyway back on topic, it's unfortunate that QF set up these pages, and like many companies out there either don't moderate to any degree, or have a policy deliberately not to (for any number of reasons) and thus you have the cesspool.

Also, please send me a friend request....

I noticed that Qantas no longer allow Public Posts to their page. They allowed this for years but over the past couple or so months, they have disabled this feature. This will now leak into their posts with people whinging off topic.

I also think it is a shame that Qantas doesn't make some effort to block this type of response post. I hate to see vulnerable people being scammed. I've only got one Facebook friend and never post sorry!

that's a good move by Qantas. It must be hard for the Qantas staff to read some of the rubbish that is posted on their site. I've been a Qantas Club life member since 1990 and apart from the occasional grumble, my experiences have been good when flying with them. Looking forward to a visit to Ireland in November on QF1 and 2

Unfortunately Social Media doesn’t work like this.
It’s more or less the same as responding to a stranger at a party.
If you are at all vulnerable then you need to be wary of who you interact with and this includes all forms of social media including Internet forums.

Hi again Princess Fiona. I had a look at the Facebook page of one of the creepy responders on Qantas. He was purportedly a US General and widowed. When I did a Google search for him, he is in fact married and working for the US military in Korea. The fake page simply had some of his photos and nothing else. I then found a warning by the US military that it was aware of a number of fake Facebook pages using this Generals name, plus other military personnel. Aside from the poor people that get scammed by these crooks it must be very distressing to find your name and photos are being use out there on the social media pages. The US post noted that the FBI was on the case.
That is why I don't use social media much and do not have any detailed profiles.
As you can tell I'm retired and have time on my hands!

I checked this morning, and the purported US general has disappeared from the Qantas Facebook page. I'm hoping the FBI got him, but more likely Facebook or Qantas deleted his comments and blocked him, following my stirring. Proves to me that it's worth trying to out these creeps.
