Qantas today announced the extension of Select on Q-Eat to Premium Economy customers travelling on select international flights.
Select on Q-Eat allows customers to pre-order their meal prior to flying, offering more choice, including an additional dish available as an online exclusive on select routes. Customers can pre-order their choice of meal between seven days and 12 hours prior to departure via ‘Manage Your Booking’ at qantas.com.
Select on Q-Eat will be progressively rolled out to all international flights on which Premium Economy is offered.

  • From today (for flights departing 16 September 2013), Qantas will extend Select on Q-Eat to Premium Economy on all flights from Dallas to Australia.
  • From 16 September (for flights departing 23 September), Qantas will extend Select on Q-Eat to Premium Economy on all flights from Los Angeles to Australia.
  • From October, Qantas will extend Select on Q-Eat to Premium Economy on all flights between Australia, London and Dubai.

Qantas Executive Manager International Customer Experience Alison Webster said she was pleased to introduce Select on Q-Eat to customers travelling in Premium Economy. “Our aim is to provide our customers with a personalised experience when they fly with us, said Ms Webster.
“The Select on Q-Eat offering in Business has been very well received since its introduction last year. Our customers tell us they enjoy the ability to confirm their meal choice prior to their flight, or to advise us in advance that their priority is to maximise their rest on board, and have their bed made up by our Cabin Crew directly after take off.”
Qantas continues to progressively roll out Select on Q-Eat for customers travelling in Business internationally. From today, for flights departing 16 September, customers travelling in Business from Narita, Shanghai, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta and Honolulu to Australia will be able to confirm their meal choice prior to flying.
Select on Q-Eat is now available in Business on the following flights:

  • Hong Kong to Australia
  • Singapore to Australia
  • Between Australia, London and Dubai
  • Los Angeles to Australia
  • Dallas to Brisbane
  • Narita to Sydney
  • Shanghai to Sydney
  • Manila to Sydney
  • Bangkok to Sydney
  • Jakarta to Sydney
  • Honolulu to Sydney

Select on Q-Eat will be extended to customers travelling internationally in Economy from late 2013. Among its other in flight enhancements, Qantas has also announced the extension of the Neil Perry Rockpool Market Inspirations currently offered in its onshore First lounges to customers onboard in First, on flights departing Sydney.
Each Market Inspirations plate is inspired by seasonal produce and changes every four to six weeks in flight. The plate is available in addition to the onboard menu and will be matched with one of Qantas’ premium Australian wines.
The first plate is a blood orange and asparagus salad with king prawns dressed with a simple classic blood orange vinaigrette. To mark the launch of Market Inspirations in flight, the plate will be paired with the limited edition 2004 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rose.

Good move IMHO. Gives guests more choice and saves QF money as less wastage and need to carry too many variations specially in premium cabins.

Is this the big announcement that we have been waiting for from QF after the election :D LOL

Yep a good move, as it saves $ and gives customer choice, however I prefer to choose what I eat onboard not in advance

So yes what is the big QF announcement after the election, I guess we need to wait for the JQ 787 delivery....

/Tongue in cheek/

Can just imagine it now when they release Eat on Q for Y pax.
Choices:
-Offal with red wine sauce.
-Reheated mini pizza.
-Gourmet Grilled steak, (3cmx3cm) piece of the cheapest cut.

LOL

the main point that pax need to realize is that QFs 'select on Q-Eat' is basically an option to use if you want to ensure you receive your 'preferred' choice of meal onboard...with maybe an 'extra' option available to those that 'pre book' their meals.. it's not meant to mirror other airlines' 'book the cook' where the menu is mostly different to the inflight 'standard' menu.. overall it's basically just another way for ANY airline to reduce wastage (in this case food wastage..and there is a huge amount of food wastage in the airline business) thus reducing costs.. on a side note...not sure how this will affect meal service times in economy when it's introduced...as prebooking a meal is basically the same as prebooking 'special' dietary requirement meals...and the more prebooked meals ordered...the longer the meal service is in economy (as some of you may have experienced on flights that have a high volume of 'special meals' that crew need to deliver prior to 'general' meal service begins!!) ... time will tell if new 'proceedures' will be introduced for the crew when this is implemented in economy... i knew for a fact ;) that the printed 'pax list' the crew work off for pax requirements/special meals/etc was often inaccurate ....yes computers are only as reliable/accurate as the humans that use them!!!) ...and all seat numbers for 'special meals' had to be manually written on each indivual pax tray by the crew before each meal...sometimes on certain routes..that involved up to 1/3 of an economy cabin.. and on QF the 'galley operator' duties are in ADDITION to their regular duties (btw no increase in pay)...galley management directly affects cabin service..im sure many F/Fers on here have witnessed this!!!!!

Your post might be tongue in cheek but its clear you did not read the release:

Select on Q-Eat will be extended to customers travelling internationally in Economy from late 2013

Nice point of differentiation from Y, though that said I really wonder what the options for W will be like (including, possibly, the "online only exclusive" option). If they extend this to Y pax, I wonder if they'll charge for it (e.g. like they charge $20 for you to select your seat).

"Boss, we got a catering problem on the SYD/LAX flight for the Y cabin!"
"What's up?"
"We need 360 hot breakfasts and 17 continental."
"So what's wrong?"
"Well, we usually stock them in 80%/20%..."
"Damn Select on Q-Eat..."

Select on Q-Eat is not a bad idea per se; I tried it myself recently on DFW/BNE. Really, only useful for those who are fussy eaters... and gives you a preview of the menu coming up on your flight :)

I also like to be surprised with menu's

When looking at restaurants I'll generally avoid looking at the menu, unless going with a very fussy eater

Takes the fun out of it, when you know the menu before getting there!

Absolutely, this is a clear winner with the accountants. Less wastage, less cost, more certainty. Thats what we all want.

We all benefit from a profitable Qantas International.

I know someone who works for the software vendor that developed the IT to support the Q eat project (it also included the limo service). The system has the ability to allow things like paying an ancillary fee to access meals from a higher cabin. It will be interesting to see if QF ever activate this feature.

He even gave the example of getting J class wine in Y. That sounds like a logistical nightmare, although I can see how a J main plate in Y might work. Not sure how much I'd pay for it though!

Does any other airline do meal preorders in W, let alone Y, inclusive in the ticket price?!

Many LCC's do - albeit at a cost to the passenger- so the concept of pre-ordering meals in Y is nothing new. I guess nobody offers this free of charge. Airfrance also offer pre-order of premium meals for Y pax (at a cost).

Sorry, I should have clarified that I meant inclusive in the ticket price.

There won't be any differentiation when it's introduced to Y by the end of the year!

Seems a few people didn't read the original post/press release very well!

I have to admit not reading the original press release at all.

But until they extend it to Y, it's a point of differentiation, but when it is extended to Y, will it be chargeable for Y pax or will it also be free of charge (just like it is all around)?

Got the QFF email with a reference to this. Said rather less than the media release Markis10 quoted. When I clicked through on the 'book now' option, hoping to find out what routes it was offered on, I got through to this page, rather than the booking page.
International Inflight Dining | Qantas

which says

...Select on Q-Eat is now available in Premium Economy on select flights, meaning you can pre-order your meal choice with confidence. If you know you are going to dine on the ground before your flight, simply select the 'No meal - maximise my rest option' up to 12 hours before you fly, and refreshments will be available for you throughout the flight.

Left me thinking the option was Q-No-Eat and the meal choices were, a reminder of the quiz show, "meal or no meal". Could of course be interpreted differently, but didn't leave me hunting for the booking page:!:

Cheers skip

I have to admit I have not been paying too much attention to this new feature.

I received an email the other day about an upcoming flight in premium economy ex-BNE and was surprised I had a choice of meal before the flight. So I go into my booking and click on Select Your Meal and this is what I see

Select on Q Eat is currently unavailable, please contact Customer Support

I dont remember receiving an email for the preceding flight in premium economy ex-SIN early October.

On very long-haul flights (e.g. MEL-DXB, MEL-LAX, SYD-DFW) I can see the chance to pay extra for J meals in Y being quite attractive and profitable for QF. The Flounge can't tide one over that long and its not like you can bring cooked food on board.
