Qantas expands Etihad partnership: Transfers to Dubai

QANTAS has announced land transport from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will be included as part of an expansion of its codeshare partnership with Etihad.

Qantas codeshare customers flying on Etihad-operated services to Abu Dhabi will now be able to transfer to Dubai by limousine or coach.

Big whoop. The last thing I would want to do after a very long flight - is to take a 60+min car ride to my destination.

The headline is a little misleading on the article.

This certainly will be useful for many pax.

In reality it is only about 1hr's drive between the two so 90mins is a generous allowance, likely to be closer to 60-70mins depending on final destination.

Consider it akin to flying into LHR vs LGW or JFK vs LGA.

Sure, it's further, but it's still a good offer. Impressed Y pax get a bus too.

Well you definitely should avoid NRT, KUL, ICN, PVG, KIX. And could probably add LHR, LGW, EWR, JFK, AKL (during heavy traffic), MXP, and I am sure many many more where 60mins-ish on ground transportation from airport to destination is the norm (unless using express rail and your destination is the express rail terminus).

Yes NRT, KUL do have a fair hike to get to your final destination after arriving, or v.v a very long drive to the airport after a big night out the night before

....yes, but if there is a choice involved, i'd rather choose the "short" transfer option, not the +60mins option.

Mind you, i've checked out a map and the distance between Abu Dhabi and Jumeriah beach appears to be minimal...

Visitors to Dubai will know that a taxi from Dubai Airport to any of Jebel Ali, Mall of the Emirates, Umm Suqueim or Silicon Oasis will often take at least 60 minutes anyway.

So a free shuttle from AUH to the western parts of Dubai will be quicker than a taxi from DXB.

Good result. I'm always amazed when people criticize free services. It's like a poor person in the US protesting against free health care - I don't get it.

A little bit off topic, but I thought this quote from the article was amusing:

“Dubai is an important regional business and tourism hub,” Mr Gurney said.

.......just not important enough for Qantas to fly (or code share) to, I guess. Whereas Abu Dhabi is where Qantas feel all the action is.

Not easy to avoid at most destinations or even returning home.

Interesting thoiugh when I arrive at BKK airport after a long flight I am actually looking forward to my 90+ minute trip to get to my final destination.

You can always book with someone else and go direct to Dubai.

I think its obvious I would choose Emirates Straitman.

What I was getting at is the headline "Qantas expands Etihad partnership": I was expecting more than just a transfer i.e. increased services, or a codeshare on QF metal to Abu Dhabi.

Actually a very good reason.Every time more are eligible for Medicaid the rebate to doctors is reduced so doctors withdraw from Medicaid so the free service is less available.
