Qantas engineers to strike over Christmas | News.com.au

QANTAS may be forced to ground planes over Christmas after engineers vowed to strike throughout December and January.

The nation’s carrier faces a maintenance backlog after professional engineers said they will strike for up to five days at a time over work conditions.

The engineers said fatigue is the key issue for the strike and a call-out policy they say is requiring them to respond to critical and complex engineering issues with less than five hours sleep between jobs.

The one airline we're not flying on this holiday season. Wonder how well management are at engineering jobs...

Now all we need is AA and CX to announce some strikes, and Oneworld's major founders will all be on strike.

The world has gone crazy! The refuelers are supposed to strike at Christmas and the engineers at easter ;)

Staff at airlines should be partially paid in stock so they have more incentive not to screw with operations at busy times!

I will be flying NZ, VS and SQ over the xmas and new year period. i guess it won't affect me (touchwood).

Out of total selfishness, I hope my flight QF653 on 23/12 is cancelled and QA offers a full refund.

As much as I love my wife... I don't fancy spend my Christmas with the in-laws out in the middle of nowhere.

I think my "Dear Santa" might be answered in kind this year. "Thanks Santa in advance!!"

Yep, changed specifically to QF to catch their 4-class sold as 3-class HKG flight. Fingers crossed, the LAE strike wasn't too bad so hopefully this one might be okay.

Not the worst idea in the world. Maybe executive pay rises / cuts should be linked to junior staff grades too - then no one can go finger pointing at each other for screwing each other / the company. ;)

All we need now is for the brewery workers to go on strike and we'd be back in the 70's again, back then just about every christmas there would be a baggage handlers and brewery workers strike.

I do love being held to ransom. I guess if these sorts of tactics continue there will be further erosion of pax numbers and commensurate reduction in the requirement for engineers. And I guess further erosion of the enjoyment of travelling on QF as this will need to be paid for somehow.

Slightly OT: you really do seem bitter towards both your partner, and their parents. It makes me wonder why you're even with them. This isn't the first time you've made a comment of this nature.

The answer is easy... I actually planned a trip to Singapore using SQ for Christmas to visit my in-laws - like "Raffles Place", "Takashimaya @ Orchard Road". Now, I am stuck in going to Perth paying more for the flights than I would on SQ... so yeah, I am slightly bitter.

How would I find out if QA is going to cancel the flight - apart from turning up to check-in and just to be turned away?

I would think that to be a tad hard considering QA does not fly to PER;)
