I do a considerable amount tof flying with Qantas including many trips to and from Perth. I enjoy my flights with Qantas but their meal service is going down hill. On the flights Perth to east coast and return an ice cream was part of lunch and dinner but they have been replaced by cheese and biscuits now the chocolate has been replaced by Tic Tacs. They might seem like small things but there small things I used to enjoy. On other Qantas flights I take in WA I have had the same meal/snack for the past 6 months not because I like it but that's all that's offered, once again only a small thing but it takes the gloss off a good Qantas flight. It's not the cabin crews fault it's what they have to work with ie paper coffee cups replacing plastic ones.

Tic Tacs, do the meals feature a lot of Garlic, sounds like a Platinum shadow is mandatory on transpac?

The removal of ice cream has been mentioned a few times of late, hopefully you're sending your feedback straight to the source too, and hopefully they're getting a lot of it.

Personally, I've always found getting ice cream strange on a plane, as it's so solid when it gets to me it sometimes feels like I'm going to bend/break the spoon!

Used to be cheese & crackers and Jilla mints or similar on the Y meal trays (although it's a long time since I flew trans-con on QF).

As others have mentioned, the ice cream went the way of the dodo a while ago. Shame, as it was nice in summer:)

Qantas enhances onboard catering with new fresh breath offering.

  • Introducing an international standard mint for business customers designed by Qantas Consulting Chef Neil Perry, on all flights from the east coast of Australia to Perth.

Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce, who visited Perth Airport today, said Qantas was committed to Western Australia for the long-term but was concerned sand gropers would be greeted by all those eastern states folks coming off the plane with bad breath. "The investment we are making in mints, particularly the Neil Perry inspired mints in business, is providing a vital boost to the local economy," Mr Joyce said.

“Qantas is committed to providing Western Australian based customers and visitors with the same high quality fresh breath on the ground as they receive in the air.

"In the next few weeks we will start our expansion of our mint initiative to include the Neil Perry offering in Business while we are already delivering Tic Tacs to our economy passengers as I speak for that seamless fresh breath experience.

“This follows recent investments to buying more garlic and salt to make the inflight meal experience more enjoyable and possibly tasty.”

“It is our market leading aircraft, lounges, superior network, frequencies, lounges, on-time performance and frequent flyer program, which have seen us maintain our status as best for business and premium travellers in Western Australia, and now you will be able to identify our passngers as their Tic Tacs jiggle while they walk.

“And from next year our A330s will be reconfigured to have lie-flat mint dispensers in Business, which will be one of the best fresh breath flying experiences in the world."

Qantas Spokesperson Oliva Worth closed off the event with the comments "there is nothing like a Tic Tac”

Aircraft don't have freezers. Ice cream - when carried - is often stored in styrofoam boxes with a little dry ice. Keeps it pretty cold and hard!!

....and speaking from past (life) experiences..it was a bugger to get the icecreams/ice pops 'just right' before serving...due to a range of factors..how long the meal service takes/how long before the aircraft actually takes off!! how much dry ice is loaded in the storage unit/what type of dry ice is used (blocks or little bead types)/the distribution of dry ice inside the storage unit...yes i could go on!! lol...EVERY flight was different..each individual icecream/pop 'defrosted' at a different rate.and when your're serving 200+ pax..running back n forth to the galley...checking them!! grrrrr  in the end...presenting 'hard' iced treats at least guaranteed pax got an iced treat...once an ice cream/ice pop melts!!!! YOU CANT REFREEZE BACK TO ORIGINAL SHAPE!!.

The ice blocks (eg. splice, frosty fuits) are usually like rocks. Wait a few minutes holding it and it's no problem. I'd rather have it rock hard than pre-melted!

Cant say i've noticed any issues with the ice cream (mini tub or bowl) on QF, VA, BA or AA. Again - if you're unhappy it's too hard, just wait a few minutes....

i'm pretty over the WA afternoon flight snack/wrap thing - it was pumpkin and chicken whaich was actually ok, now its some sort of horrible beef thing.

I flew in whY PER/SYD on a domestic A330-200 earlier this week & took a photo of the meal. Sure it was nice to get the icecream or iceblock after the meal however IMHO what you get offered now is still pretty good as far as airline meals go.

The flight coming back PER/SYD had a much better standard of catering than the 738 BNE/PER as the only meal in whY was salmon pie which would not be my first choice for a meal but unfortunately it was the only choice.

QF no longer operate any A330's between BNE & PER as they needed them to operate the MEL/PER & SYD/PER flights exclusively.

On the A330 you get offered the choice of two meals - our flight was either green curry chicken or teriyaki beef (I chose the latter) & it's heaps more spacious when moving about the cabin rather than crew & pax trying to squeeze past each other going in opposite directions on a single aisle aircraft.
The fist pic is of the QF Teriyaki Beef with bread roll & Lurpak butter that was easy to spread, 2 water crackers plus bega cheese, 250ml bottle Mount Franklin water & a Belgian chocolate brownie which goes well with a cup of tea or coffee. I could have had a foc wine but I chose Coke Zero.

The second pic is of the VA meal also PER/SYD on the A330 taken by SO as we flew back separately. As his soft drink & cutlery isn't on the tray at the time the photo looks a little sparse however you pretty much get the same amount of food as on QF.

He had lamb which he said was very tender, VA bread rolls are wrapped in cellophane, water is a 110ml plastic cup sealed with foil, they also got macadamia royals which I'm assuming is chocolate coated but SO didn't eat them (nor did he bring them back either which he got told off for)!
VA also came around with cheese & bikkies & another drinks service prior to landing in SYD. I didn't get a 2nd service PER/SYD on QF but it was a much quicker flight than going over when we got cheese & bikkies plus drink on the BNE/PER sector about one hour prior to landing.

Edit: cannot upload pics at the moment from phone or computer but will try again later.
