I couldn't see this posted elsewhere, and sorry if it duplicates:

Qantas considers

Why not just simply bring back J and F ASA at Classic Rates. Now that would be simpler and fairer :). Im sure a lot of those unsold seats would sell for good points and co payments.

But that's a shortcut to status! Can't have that!

Knowing Qantas, you'll have to pay the ASA points differential plus the fare differential. What could be simpler and fairer than that?

It is similar to what some other airlines already have in place, the relevant one for me is Air NZ.
It will be interesting to see how this is implemented and teh transperancy of the process as that was a huge FAIL for NZ but they seem happy with the system now and there is little noise from the high tier frequent flyers.

I can only see this penalising FFs who put in points upgrades requests. Yes, the article notes Qantas says these paid upgrades will only be processed after FF requests buI simply don't believe it.

So does that mean my points upgrade will be confirmed 7 days out? Good if it does:)

Me neither Danger.
Think it's a bad idea. I don't travel on too many QF international flights these days with empty premium cabins. Didn't QF introduce the points upgrade at the gate a year or so ago to increase the amount of upgrades? Can't see how this could work alongside the new system.
As for being able to upgrade from Y-F IMO that's a bad idea.

I'm not ever likely ( never say never) to fly long haul in Y if I can possibly avoid it.
So I will in all likelihood rely on classic award seats planned well ahead to do my international long haul. So no real incentive for me here. I miss the old on line JASA / FASA options.
I'm sure there will be more adventurous types happy to bid for upgrades. I need more certainty!
