I fly to India regularly using Jet Airways (9W) codeshares, connecting to Qantas in SIN or HKG, as do my colleagues.

Jet Airways are on the verge of bankrupcy as anyone who follows the Indian aviation market would be aware. They are are still operating, but as many as 30 planes are grounded due to lapsed lease payments:
From being India's top airline to near bankruptcy: The Jet Airways crisis explained

My colleague got stuck in Delhi last week for 16 hours (!) with no useful help from Jet, they only offered the next flight to SIN 2 days later. Eventually our corporate travel agent was able to re-route him on Sri Lankan via CMB then SIN to connect to QF. I don't know if that was done on the same ticket or if they had to buy an entirely new ticket to get him to SIN.

What is Qantas' position typically in situations like this? Have they made any announcements on the future of the 9W codeshares? Obviously they don't have much control over what happens to Jet - that's a matter for their major stakeholder, Etihad, and the Indian government. But they need a new partner, as the India feed into Singapore is critical if they're going to keep supporting 3 x (almost) daily flights there, and plus it's a hit to the brand if this kind of thing persists. Unfortunately I can't see any other obvious partner they could use. It basically has to be out of Singapore - but Air India is *A and not really ideal. Airlines like Indigo may be off the table (although I use them domestically and would love to earn QF points there!).

I may have to go back to Singapore Airlines for all my India travel, at the expense almost certainly of maintaining QF WP status this year :( For Delhi, Cathay Pacific is an option via HKG, but this isn't really suitable for south India (and they don't have many flights there anyway). Any other options I should consider?

If you want to keep QF WP status why not fly with SriLankan (UL), they fly to 13 destinations in India. If you need more SC you can fly to CMB via SIN on QF instead of using the direct MEL-CMB flight which gives less SC.

I want to keep WP but my time is also valueable too. I'm SYD based so the one stop SIN connections have been pretty efficient. Didn't know about CMB-MEL, will see if that works out for something, but still adds the MEL-SYD sector.

Yes, seems like most UL fares allowed routing are SYD-MEL-CMB-xx_. So 2 stops, but at least transferring in MEL in easy.

Whereabouts in south India? The CX codeshare does extend to Chennai and Bangalore (but schedules may be another issue..)

I feel your pain. Thankfully my travel to India has declined to about once a year and Sri Lanka has increased so UL and QF codeshares work well for me. When I have to go to India I always schedule in a trip to Sri Lanka either on the out bound or in bound leg and do the hop across, and codeshare the other way back usually via Singapore on UL and QF.

QF have no issue codesharing with Star Alliance members if it makes commercial sense and there aren’t many options so you never know.

Air India would probably want the codeshare. It would give them a competitive edge over SQ as it would give guaranteed seats from SIN-India

Not 100% sure where you usually travel in India, however as was mentioned above QF and CX codeshare on a number of routes to India. These include:
  • Hong Kong – Bangalore
  • Hong Kong – Mumbai
  • Hong Kong – Calcutta
  • Hong Kong – Delhi
  • Hong Kong – Chennai
Whilst not always as convenient to travel up through HKG, I personally always travel this way (to India 5 times in the past year) given the overall experience with CX over 9W (lounges in HKG, better hard and soft product) and recent numerous incidents / issues with 9W.

Thanks Fergo- this looks like the best option for a one stop journey from SYD. I knew CX flies to DEL but wasn't aware of BLR and MAA, which I do visit as well as HYD and occasionally BOM. And with one of QF's SYD-HKG flights being re-timed recently, it gives more option for connections depending on the India flight timings. I suspect these haven't come up for me in the past (in favor of 9W) due to timing issues.

The same advice applies for MH.

Single connection ex SYD is possible to many destinations in India (DEL, MAA, BOM, HYD, BLR, etc) with F lounges in SYD and KUL... only downside is the abysmal SC earn on SYD-KUL.

Can fly SYD-SIN-KUL on QF/3K if needing the SC though

No problem. I will say that the timings can be a royal pain in the bum from a layover perspective, particularly on the return due to flight timings from India. However HKG is quite a good place to spend a day, whether lounge hopping or going into the city for some lunch.

I have found that sometimes the QF codeshare hasn’t been available (as seats were sold out) so have flown CX number instead. Only marginally less SC.

As mentioned you can go MH through KUL however I have not done this due to terrible SC earn and no desire to change planes more than once (I.e if going SIN-KUL-India).

Still can't find any codeshares to BLR (on any operating carrier) marketed by Qantas - the only options appearing now on Qantas.com are an interline ticket to KA - Cathay Dragon. This is fine if it weren't for Cathay's awful points/SC earn. Although as OWE I've gotten op-up's on KA twice in the last year (on other routes), so I do like them for that reason :)

So as the KA timing wasn't great anyway, I ended up having to book on MH, which has excellent timing on the westbound flight, though will also be pretty awful on the SC's. Unfortunately SQ pricing was way too high (I'm also VA Plat but don't need the SC's there), I guess this is the logical outcome of all of 9W's seats being removed from the market.

Return I am going via UL, BLR-CMB-MEL-SYD, but given recent situation there, unsure of the wisdom of this, particularly if I get suck in CMB for some reason.

Hi All,

I have family members visiting Melbourne from Delhi on Qantas. Delhi to Singapore leg is on codeshare with Jet Airways.

They are struggling to find any information there. Hoping for some advice here - are they better off booking a separate flight from DEL to Singapore assuming the remaining Qantas flight will run as normal. Or would Qantas play a role in organising alternative flights for them to get to Singapore?

Appreciate any insights.

Cheers,
Nish

As all Jet Airways flights are cancelled, they should already have been contacted through whatever channel they booked the flight originally. If it was booked directly with Qantas, then yes Qantas will rebook them on alternate flights. As discussed here, this would perhaps be Cathay Pacific with the connection in to Qantas in HKG rather than SIN, although other routings are possible. They/you should follow up either the travel agent or airline directly for more information.

They absolutely should NOT book their own flights DEL-SIN. If they do this, whoever issued the ticket will treat them as a ‘no-show’ on the jet airways ticket and automatically cancel the SIN-MEL sector (and all the rest of the flights), leaving them with nothing.

Get this sorted out now with a new ticket all the way from DEL-MEL and back again.

I already have my BNE-SIN-BNE tickets on QF booked for a trip at the end of May. I have to visit BOM during the trip and usually would have used 9W. However, my options now appear to be limited as the daytime SG flight departing BOM doesnt leave until 1145, arriving at Changi at 1950 - far too late for the 2030 QF departure, especially without an interline connection. So guessing this means I either have to delay my return by one day or cancel the SIN-BNE with QF and book a through route with SG?

or find another connection to SIN. Googling ‘schedule BOM-SIN’ will give non-stops and connectors.

SG operates two overnight flights BOM-SIN, SQ 423 and SQ 425, leaving 10:45pm and 11:40pm from BOM. I suggest the easiest option would be to use one of those to connect to your QF flight, with a daytime layover in SIN. You can sleep in a transit hotel in Singapore, which will be a replacement for the hotel night in BOM that you missed - this shouldn't really change your overall time spent in BOM or arrival date back in BNE.

Alternatively see if you can rebook the SIN-BNE flight via MEL on QF 38 (departs around midnight) if it is operating that day. Or fly up to DEL the night before and take the day flight out of DEL which should arrive in SIN with plenty of time to transfer to QF to BNE.
