Hello,

I have the following itinerary on 3 separate Qantas PNR’s. I have contacted qantas and through my discussion with them they have advised me they have linked my 3 bookings together to enable me to collect both boarding passes at first check in each direction as well as check luggage through to final destination and avoid rechecking in at my transit.

My flights are
BNE-NRT economy return. Paid via online agent. On Qantas aircraft .
NRT-HEL business one way. Qantas Award booking. On Finnair aircraft.
HEL-NRT business one way. Qantas Award booking. On Finnair aircraft.

Regarding the above can anyone confirm from experience that I will be issued with both boarding passes at BNE check in as well as luggage checked through to HEL and similar on my return journey?

Also can people advise what lounge access I will have for BNE, NRT and HEL based on the tickets booked for each flight.

FYI: I have an overnight transit for BNE-NRT-HEL of approx 14hours where I will exit the airport and stay the night in a hotel (plan on using small carry on bag only) and I have approximately a 10 hour transit for HEL-NRT-BNE where I plan to stay inside the airport not having to exit immigration/customs and will wait in the lounge. Having to collect and check in for the next leg of my return journey would mean waiting several hours until the qantas check in counters open which I definitely want to avoid.

Thanks for any input and assistance.

Regards
P

Welcome to AFF, Flight76, and enjoy Tokio and Helsinki on your trip!
If your transit through NRT is <24 hours, you get your bags checked through to HEL / BNE. You can also get the boarding passes for both flights in each direction at the initial departure (BNE / HEL).

Instead of loitering at the airport for 10 hours on your way back, I'd strongly recommend you visit at least Narita town (e.g. Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and the park behind it) or go and venture in Tokio (e.g. Ueno & Akihabara, or Tokio National Museum is great). It's an easy trip on the train and the airport itself is efficient so you'll have ample time to enjoy life outside of the airport. Just check which train line to take as they run couple and have different stopping patterns.

The lounge I leave to more experienced ones to answer.

Finnair is OneWorld aren’t they?
So theoretically it shouldn’t matter if your flights start with QF or AY, the lounges you can use will be the same.

BNE will be no lounge access as the next flight is economy, and the same in NRT prior to that final return flight from NRT to BNE.
Before the other flights you’ll be able to use a OneWorld business-class lounge beforehand, whether that be Qantas or Finnair or any other OneWorld member.
From a quick Google, that means for the outbound flight it’s JAL, Cathay, American Airlines or Qantas at NRT. For the return departing HEL, it looks like Finnair might be the only option (I couldn’t see any others quickly) - but also looks like they’ve got brand-spanking lounges opened this year, which could be good. :)

Regarding checking-through to the final destination; I’d like to hear what the more experienced AFF’ers say. In my very limited experience, I’ve always been told that my 2nd flight was confirmed as soon as I checked in for my first flight, but when the 2nd flight was over 24hrs in the future I’ve been told it was too early for them to issue me a ticket & seat-number. Having said that, last time I flew long-haul, online check-in was from 48hrs beforehand, and if all airlines do that now then I wouldn’t mind betting you might be able to get your tickets the whole way through now.

Even though Qantas has 'linked' the bookings you should still advise the check-in agent at BNE that you have an onward flight that you'd like checked though all the way.

As far as I understand it, the 'link' is not a flashing light or anything like that, and unless the agent knows it there they won't automatically look for it.

As other have said, no lounge in BNE on departure as your flight is in economy. No lounge in NRT on the way back as your next flight (back to BNE) is in economy.
