JQ uses Openskies from Navitare (newest system, 1st airline to use and trial it AFAIK)

Hmmm....that explains a lot.

TT uses Newskies from Navitare (older system)
DJ uses Newskies from Navitare (older system)
JQ uses Openskies from Navitare (newest system, 1st airline to use and trial it AFAIK)

You got it the wrong way round, Newskies is new, Open Skies is the old HP one: Jetstar New Skies Reservation System Upgrade Complete, Upgrade Sucessful - Airline-Hotel-News

Both virgin and JQ use newskies now I beleive:

Virgin upgrades to Navitaire's New Skies - News - Software - ZDNet Australia

Note that PB and VA use Amadeus but I dont beleive the use Altera.

Keep in mind that not all Amadeus Customers use Altea for checkin. Some airlines use Amadeus for their reservations system only and use another system for checkin whereas other clients (eg QF) use both Amadeus for reservations and Altea for checkin.

Not sure how many users were affected however if it was 0830 on Sunday in SYD it would be mid arvo to early evening on Saturday night in the USA so would've affected those airlines who use the Altea system for checkin.

In Europe it would have been 2230 on Sat night and I'd say there would be more European airlines that are users of Altea so unless these airlines have flights departing in the wee hours of the morning, there would have been minimal disruption to operations over there.

Originally there were 3 European Airline owners of Amadeus - Iberia, Air France and Lufthansa and each carrier's country hosted part of their operation ie Amadeus Admin HQ was in Madrid, Help Desk in Nice and mainframe in Erding. Any scheduled system maintenance used to be done at 0300 each Sunday.

Don't know whether it's still the case now but the airspace area over the mainframe was a designated 'no flyzone' same as the Pentagon. Who knows, maybe Maverick and Goose decided to do a 'flyby' of the tower to impress an Admiral's daughter somewhere.

Did anyone experience any problems doing the manual checkin without having a hard copy of their itinerary with them or did QF have a 'workaround'?

Cheers
Oz
