So situation is this...
Parents are flying LHR-MEL and MEL-LHR in Y+

As it was their 70th birthdays on christmas day and 2 weeks ago i wanted to upgrade them to business one way as there is a sale on at the moment which means i can afford to do this. (looking at roughly $1200 to upgrade the both of them in fare diff + fees)

Spoke to QF agent who was very nice but explained that although you can combine Y and Y+ fares, you cannot buy Y+ and J fares on same ticket. WTF?

Not sure of the loads on the flight (QF9 on 16/3) but seeing as they are offering sale fares i presume its not that busy.

Just seems an odd situation where i want to give QF $$$ but their 'systems' cannot accept them.

Anyhow - RedRoo maybe mark that down as a future upgrade?? Along with ability to upgrade a flight in MMB with cash or points.

Try Booking it as a multi city trip and it shows Y+ and J on same page

Funny you say that as i tried to do this from the UK when i was over there (ticket booked from uk) and they said the same thing. I thought that maybe they couldnt do it from there, so thought i would try from OZ. So been told same thing by 2 different people now.

Red Roo - can you confirm / deny whether this can be done?

I believe this is correct. Yesterday I got off the phone from QF trying to upgrade one sector HKG to SYD.
I am booked in Y+ and wanted to pay for J.
The story I got is " You can upgrade from Y to Y+, but not Y+ to J"
She couldn't tell me why, but said it has always been the case. It does seem a little strange, that I was offering QF my money and they politely declined.
Just hoping my upgrade comes through both ways.

Thats the exact story i was told.

From my perspective i am a customer wanting to give Qantas $$$ for something they appear to not be able to sell yet but they cant accept it because...who knows why.

Have you tried going into MMB and changing flight as it does from memory give you chance to change to a higher class.

That is incorrect. It has never given the option to change your class of travel. You have to pay QF to do that over the phone.

Sadly yes, this is the case... and it makes sense:

The added $$ from upsell would likely be eclipsed by the loss of business tickets for day flights (e.g. to and from Asia the revenue loss from someone who would have bought a J r/t but instead with the flexibility this would give goes Y on the day flight is higher than the few who would have bought a Y r/t but instead chose J for the overnight leg)

BA allows upgrades for cash or points through MMB. They also allow upgrades on one or both legs after purchase. Have done for some years now. If this was bad i would have thought they would have removed this ability..

And BA's normal quote page will show Y. Y+ and J when quoting a fare. There may be some restrictions on some routes but Y+ and J would normally seem possible.

Happy wandering

Fred

You can definitely combine a half Y+ and half J on the same ticket with QF, so I'm not sure what is going on here. It should just be a relatively straightforward change fee and fare difference.

Perhaps call back and see if you get someone who knows differently to the original person...
