Well of course you don't have to, if you are happy to be woken up at 4 am by a text you don't have to use the time of day service. Sorry but that sounds like a week argument to me, we have the option of taking simple solutions and more complex in many areas of our lives, why do you want to deprive others because you find it a bit complicated.

Same answer applies for the 7am flight really, it's not the default option to have this "don't SMS me between xx- yy" on, so unless you wanted the service you wouldn't turn it on. As for a solution looking for a problem, the fact this thread is 4 pages long suggests some people think it's a problem.

Have you actually read what has been posted on the topic?

Some people may think it is a problem, but they are in the minority from those who think it isn't a problem, and the solution may be to either have the phone on silent or to turn the phone off.

Another for the early as possible SMS. IF connecting from O'seas it would be a different time zone and may affect me if MCT had been breached, etc.

And are people sure the iPhone turns on if physically turned off and an alarm is set?

I do not think this is the behaviour of the iphone, unless changed in a relatively recent update. If it's off, it stays off. Most other phones, smart or not, turn themselves on.

2 people think it's a problem, and everyone else thinks those two people are princesses.

If you lot weren't warned at 5am you would all be whinging about the lack of advance notice.

Now harden the F up!

Qantas are doing their job in the way they know best.

Turn off your phone if you don't want to be disturbed.

Probably couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm definitely in the "Send it whenever as long as it is in advance of the event" camp. Don't care if it is 1am in the middle of the night. If I didn't want to suffer the disturbance of receiving an SMS then I know what to do with my phone.

Can't decide which tag to add to this: #mountainfrommolehill or #firstworldproblems

Yes to the iPhone alarm question.

Was this about the iPhone turning On when off, for an alarm?

Just tried it an it does not turn on. This is for an iPhone 4 on up to date OS with default alarm clock. Will not be different for older iPhones but I guess it's possible the 4s turns itself on. Can't see it on the net though so I assume all iPhones will stay off if turned off, regardless of alarms.

My iPhone will turn itself on for the alarm when I turn it off.

Is that from standby or from fully powered down.

Some of the reasons I thought the sms was unnecessary at that hour was a) the flight was 12 hours away and b) QF had already rebooked me onto the 5:00PM flight.

I am wondering whether the SMS is triggered as soon as the issue is known (so if the a/c had gone tech at 2AM would the SMS be sent then) or at a specific point in time.

I guess as my travel is relatively simple I don't feel the need to call QF immediately to reschedule thus I don't need as much warning as possible. This is the first cancellation SMS I have had in a long time - last time was years ago and was I think the middle of the day.

I just put it in flight mode when I use it as an alarm clock. Particularly when I'm O/S in a different time zone.

I didn't know that... I guess it's one reason why they say turn it to flight mode first before turning it off... Not that I use the alarm very often...

The iPhone does not turn it self back on after it is fully powered down. Maybe mannej uses a special app, or his phone is jail broken and altered, but a normal iPhone will not turn back on for an alarm. By turned off, I mean that button on top held web held down and the slider pulled to power down the device. I have just checked numerous support forums to see if there was an alteration in behavior at some point.

Flight mode is ideal for those who want an alarm to go off but do not wan to be disturbed by calls.

It is also interesting that the two people who commented on it being a problem are the only ones that were actually woken up by the SMS...

Mine doesn't (4S) which was quite bad when I just got the phone. I woke up at 9am instead of 7am whilst I was supposed to be in a meeting at 9...

Possibly because everyone else sleeps with theirs on silent. ;)

I can recommend 'Silent Time' for Android users.

So I got woken up at 5am this morning by an SMS from Qantas telling me my flight from Melbourne to Sydney this afternoon was cancelled.

This doesn't seem like very thoughtful customer service - surely they could have waited until some reasonable hour before sending out the SMS?

8am or 9am would have been much less likely to annoy customers...
How is Qantas to know which time zone you happen to be in when they sent the SMS :?:

As this was for a flight in 12 hrs time you could have been in anyone of several different time zones when the message was sent.

Send it ASAP IMHO.

I agree, once I got such an SMS and immediately rang QF. I was so quick the call centre hadn't received the notification and had to check my actual booking. A quick minute of checking by them and they were able to advise me of my new flight. All ok.

Did you do that at 5AM?

I certainly did.

I didn't know why the flight was cancelled and thought that if there were going to be people put onto other flights I wanted to be given the best choice.

It is also interesting that the two people who commented on it being a problem are the only ones that were actually woken up by the SMS...

I didn't/don't have a problem with being woken at 5.00am if this occurs.
