My husband and I are booked to fly Syd to LAX on 12 January and we have friends due to do the same flights two days later. These flights have now been cancelled and we have both been rerouted through Melbourne.

We have looked at the Qantas website and it appears that Qantas has cancelled all Syd-LAX direct flights at least for that week.

Just wondering why Qantas would do that?

I wouldn't be surprised to see more "consolidation" of Qantas flights currently scheduled between January and March once the airline realises expected loads are lower than expected or that there aren't enough crew/planes available.

Hopefully, most passengers will at least be automatically rebooked on suitable alternatives and don't need to contact the woeful call centre.

Extra status credits!

The extra status credits are the bonus. However business class for the flight out of Melbourne is full and we cannot sit together!

PS our friends are flying on points so do not even get the extra status credits!

We will go via Melbourne. We are just intrigued as to why Qantas would cancel an ‘iconic’ flight out of Sydney for a Melbourne flight? Simple Flying today described Sydney as Australia’s aviation capital!

The extra 40 SCs will be welcome!

Demand might better out of MEL due to less competition, purely speculating.

QF have the direct TP market to themselves at the moment out of MEL

I'd say because they can put the SYD pax on the AA flight as well.

Also I reckon demand is softer with the current 72 hour isolation on arrival.

But the alternative would be they could put MEL pax on both SYD-LAX flights. And cut their fuel costs slightly. Either way you'll have the same number of potential pax on their planes.

The quarantine equally affects both states regardless of which flight is cancelled.

More available crew in MEL.

They'll cancel whichever has weaker bookings, "Iconic" doesnt pay the bills

I had mine cancelled on 07 Jan but it is not all flights that week. It seems to be just Wed & Fri flights cancelled.

I'm due to fly SYD-LAX on Tuesday January 11 so this thread had me intrigued. I've checked and currently looks like my flight still on but I can see N/A for January 12.
