Qantas cabin refresh for 42 Boeing 737s from 2027

Better than nothing, however updating early 2000 build 737s in 2027 isn’t great planning. I really wish they did this last decade.

On the technical front, I can’t say I’ve seen any operator upgrade 737-800s with new bins, walls. I know Delta did something with its old A320 fleet, not seen a 737 done like this, could be a first.

The additional investment to improve the flying experience for Qantas customers on existing aircraft will see 42 of the airline’s 737 aircraft receive a full cabin overhaul, including:

• New Business seats
• New Economy seats
• New, larger overhead lockers with up to 50 per cent more space, making it easier for every customer to store their carry on bags
• Full cabin refresh including new carpets, sidewalls and mood lighting
• The aircraft will continue to be enabled with fast and free Wi-Fi

Fairly sure QF had trialed larger bins on one of the early 737’s a number of years ago. There was a thread floating around somewhere on here

Interesting! These are brand new aircraft with bigger bins than normal but Qantas is going to rip them out and install new bins that can larger caryron bags and also more bags. Can't see the reason for this, its not like Qantas will make more money from passengers carrying on bigger bags and more bags!

I suspect these will be the newer aircraft aka the ones with IFE and Boeing Sky Interior? As much as I love having IFE on aircraft, the last few flights I've had the IFE has been unusable in economy on the 737 - click on one thing (e.g. view all "boxsets") and another selection pops up. Least in J the remote overcomes this.

If I were to hazard a guess, the biggest constraint for them to wait 2 years is seat availability.

Believe VH-VXC was refurbed as part of Project Amber, but the trial stopped there.

The only thing that was picked up from the trial was the plastic divider, prior to this it was a curtain, that was installed on the remainder of the fleet.

Was a thread on FT about it but the photos appear gone. This one remains in Google.

One can hope that they adopt the US model of more extra leg room seats, but judging from the 321XLR configs, the answer likely would be no.

In a statement to the ASX, Qantas announced a huge makeover of its fleet, including 100 new planes, 18 of which are set to be delivered in FY25... The overhaul will be in addition to a fleet investment in which the new Airbus A321XLR progressively replaces the 737s over the next decade and more of the smaller A220s join the fleet – five of these are already in operation. Qantas said it would be one of the first airlines in the world to run the A321XLR. The aircraft is scheduled to arrive in June, with four of the next generation aircraft expected by the end of the calendar year.

Qantas I know you're reading this, but I would implore you to improve the leg room in economy if you are investing and looking into the future. Australia's heights are only going up and it is not stopping. It will be better for your cabin crew and other passenger's safety so really tall people wont have to keep putting their legs down the aisle. It is actual suffering with knees hurting jamming against the seat in front.

The only reason I can think of for QF is if row 4 sales data show they can add a few more extra leg room rows at the cost of 1 full row of pax. Then they might adjust a few more rows to have extra leg room.
