Yep the beauty of a proper One World airline. ,..well done.

But by 99% of the flight reviews I’ve read it looks like AY economy is very basic, and their premium economy - seat aside - is about equal to Qantas economy?

I get your point, but I don't select PE for the food, I choose for seat/comfort for long flights.

YMMV! 30 years I have had a few, best one was a $35 fare BNE-SYD the day after AN collapsed. CX has been the most prolific, had a couple with EK.

My WP wife travels much more than I do, and invariably when she travels on CX they treat her well, more so than QF does….

Need to have J seats that one one wants to pay for (either points or cash upgrades for an op up. Happens a lot to Rockhampton where J is often empty.

Good for me, I often book to/from ROK with hours to spare and have a few times this year snagged a J reward seat hours before departure.
