Qantas adds Brisbane-Manila but suspends Sydney-Shanghai flights

Be interesting to see if it would work.
SQ is pretty established here and has built up some good will but if the price is right who knows. MH might be the one that suffers
Would have to be an afternoon flight IMO and on at least an A330 for me to choose it over SQ. With SQ increasing to two services in the future it'll be a hard market to break into. I hope for the sake of competition that it works though.

Airports often talk up business opportunities.
The owners of CBR have been talking up increased international flights within the next 5 years. Return of QR and SQ, in addition to flights to AKL (either QF A220s or NZ), CX to HKG, a mainland Chinese carrier and Vietjet. They are suggesting having 13 airlines (currently 8) and 22 non stop destinations (currently 13) by 2028.

Tell 'em they're dreaming...

Tell Terry Snow he’s dreaming.

It took EK half a decade to resume flights to ADL, which has a million more people than CBR, just to give him some perspective.

Question for those in the know, I cannot select seats on the CX flights have tried on CX website but says I need to:
Online seat selection is not available. Please contact your booking agent for further assistance.

Any way around this?

I flew CX a few weeks ago on a QF revenue ticket, same problem.

Only way I got this solved was contact CX on WhatsApp. It will ask you a series of questions and you might need to fudge it to get to a human, otherwise you get the “contact your travel agent“ response, and QF can’t assist.

Once you get CX they’ll happily assign it to you.

The ACT Government will likely need to dip/start their Aviation Investment Funds to attract (subsidise) most of those international carriers/routes, similar to how the other states do it (especially Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia)

Axing PVG is probably partly QF’s rebuttal to the ACCC. Break the JV with MU on antitrust concerns? Ok then we’ll cut the route we were contractually obliged to operate and cut overall market capacity.

Lets see how consumers like MU’s monopoly.

MU has added the 2nd daily flight from Syd-Pvg, same as Mel-Pvg, 2 twice a day now. They used to be the seasonal flight, so I doubt the reason that QF gave due to low demand.

Am kinda disappointed, enjoyed the Q129 hop to PVG, timing was pretty good for onward domestic connections all in a single day of flying.

But when you think about how cheap J fares often are from mainland carriers, sometimes less than half the price of QF, they are just never going to be competitive. Especially when flying CZ get unlimited Evian, QF the Yaru water with floaters 😂

Shame that the additional SYD-SIN flights are basically the same time as the existing flights, would have been nice to see a red eye SYD-SIN and day flight ex SIN.
we had a very detailed thread a couple of months ago why overnight to Singapore simply does not work out for QF incl timing, aircraft utilisation, airport charges etc considerations.

It's odd that they chose to expand on existing destinations (SIN, BLR, MNL) with the freed up A330s rather than look at new destinations. I thought KUL was a strong favourite given the rumours (slide 24). Maybe QF decided not to use those A330s on a new destination as they clearly view the PVG suspension as temporary and would need to withdraw from a destination completely to resume SYD-PVG if they had launched new flights to a place like KUL? With these current changes, QF can just reduce frequency on existing destinations without withdrawing when they feel the need to resume SYD-PVG.

It's not the only flight between Australia and China.

So to get this clear, you want all flights between China and Australia to be cut just because they may have different strategic and military objectives to Australia?

China is a crucial economic partner of Australia. Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Qantas, Sichuan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Xiamen Airlines continue to fly a multitude of services from various ports in China to various ports in Australia :)
I am actually saying that’s what should happen… I am NOT advocating for Chinese airlines and cut Qantas out… in fact the Chinese economy is worse than others are suggesting… even HK economy is struggling…

I was going to say a second PER-SIN

They used to have this pre-Covid. I don't think it was daily though and it was a 737. I think the flight times were rubbish with early evening PER departure to SIN and a midnight or so departure from SIN back to PER with an early arrival. Can't see who that would really appeal to. I wish there was a morning departure from PER and an early afternoon departure from SIN.

Come to AFF for a serve of casual racism...
I am not here to cause trouble but this is from Voice of America in simplified Chinese version on this Qantas cancellation saying it is a political issue as well

Voice of America is funded by USA state department (similar to Australia foreign affairs department)

This is the worst new for me today, as I have booked 3 business awards seats at the end of the year, now they are suddenly gone! Rang customer service to seek solution, "Sorry, can't help you out, we can't find any award seats for you during the whole month of Dec 24, and we can't book you into the commercial fare either, so get your points back and suck it up!"
Update from my end today:

  • Called up early this morning and got connected to SA call centre, staffs not aware this route has been suspended, and no idea what the rebooking policy is
  • we both googled the policy from the Qantas website, and I guided the staff where to find it
  • After read the policy, the agent agreed to find an alternative flight if there's any availability even it's in commercial fare
  • 2 mins after on hold, confirmed rebooking with QF and CX via HKG, only one slot is available for 3 people in the same cabin, take it or give up
  • Don't want to take the risk to wait, I took whatever QF can offer right now
Overall, it took me 5 calls with 5 different answers to solve the issue, although the travel date and time have all been changed, but at least it still gets my family to the destination in the midnight.
