Qantas accelerates 787 delivery

July 14, 2010 - 9:47AM
Qantas Airways has brought forward its receipt of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliners by two years.
Qantas still has orders for 50 of the B787-8 series aircraft, but in a change to the order will receive the first eight from mid-2012, the company said in a statement.
The remaining seven B787-8 aircraft, and 35 B787-9 aircraft, will be delivered from 2014, replacing Qantas's B767-300ER fleet.

The first aircraft to be delivered will be used by Jetstar for international operations, Qantas said.[/QUOTE]

I'd stake my money on No (in the short term).

On what basis do you make this comment?

As the JQ 332's will replace QF 763's then surely (depending on which routes these aircraft will ply) QF will want these configured in either their international or domestic configuration?

My guess is that they will replace the Jetstar leather seats with Qantas cloth seats and return the aircraft back to the same configuration as VH EBJ and EBK for Qantas domestic services. Remember - the first four JQ A332's were taken from QF domestic service, plus one or two since, so the QF seats will be lying around somewhere!.

If all seven A332's come back from Jetstar then the seven 767-336's leased from BA could go.

Can't see them going through the expense of re-configuring to match the much nicer interiors of VH EBM and EBN.

Whoops, just counted using the fingers on both hands.

I think VH EBK was in fact comverted from QF to JQ via the change in seats and paint job.:)

Nope, I'm happy to correct you according to my QF mole :)

QF will at that point either return or reconfigure to match the next generation domestic and trans tasman product.

Why would they revert to an old configuration?...when by that time I imagine the next gen 73H's will be infiltrating the domestic fleet as well.

Exciting!

Pauly7, hope you are correct. Wow.

If they get 50 787's between 2012 and 2017 are they planning on keeping the A333's and A332's much past 2017 ??

I didn't think QF would go through the expense of re-wiring the Jetstar A332's for AVOD & new seats when they wouldn't be holding onto them for that long.

Because DJ have Live to air on all dom flights, and QF know it...

QF are busy trying to put in AVOD into dom flights, and DJ will hammer them if they don't... Besides they can hold onto planes for 20 odd years...

Personal opinion based on cost of reinstalling ife etc.

Constantly switching ac between carriers is also a good way to drive your qf crewing costs down to a jq level (not sure how the existing union agreements protect against that)

Does this mean for those who travel from Perth-Tokyo have to wait until 2014 before QF replaces the outdated 767 with a better product?

Probably, if the route doesn't get Jetstarised first.

The Japanese market has been a mugs game for QF. Why do you think they don't give it much attention and have also cut QF capacity on the route / replaced it with JQ in the last three years?

QF are replacing the A330 with a B747 on the Sydney-Tokyo route in October, so QF must still have a major interest in this market

May have something to do with JL pulling capacity off this route or pulling out altogether.

Problem being for QF that half of the A330 JQ fleet cannot take skybeds and have long turnaround times for shorthaul domestic ops.

JL will stop flying BNE-NRT at the end of September. They will continue with SYD-NRT services, and I don't think they are downgrading the plane on this route either (currently a B777 and will continue to be a B777)...

And that's why I'm starting to get used to flying SQ now.....

I was talking to a Qantas flight attendant a few weeks back and she said that B767's needed to be retired!
