Hi all.

Just covering all the bases here.

My mum was flying with my Aunt on this morning's 11:40 Jetstar flight to Cairns. She had gotten to the airport early was waiting to the side of the check in area (apparently near a pillar and a walkway - but that bits hazy) playing with her ipad. She did not notice her purse being lifted from her backpack (which was on the ground at her feet) at or before 10:45am.

She has reported the theft to the AFP and Jetstar have moved her & my aunt to the later flight for only $50.

My goal her is to hopefully recover the purse, minus cash and cards but with her rather useful drivers license. I was hoping after the bollard swinging incident that occurred down the road, that the security footage would be rather good. The footage may show the wallet being quickly dispersed in some rubbish bin near by.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to move this forward from my desk? She will be at the airport until the 15:40 flight so there is plenty of time to go somewhere in walking distance of the terminal.

Its also a lesson to remind one's parents that ATMs are plentiful and you need not get extra cash out or take all your cards with you when traveling on a plane. Its also a good idea to separate your wallet, but in this case its only an express envelope away.

Thanks

Report to AFP, double check lost property, retrace steps.
Next steps would be to cancel anything of value in the purse (eg credit and debt cards).

Beyond that all the bases are covered and sorry to be barer of bad news but it's highly unlikely the purse will ever be returned (with or without the money).

Also, check all the rubbish bins. Sometimes they take the money and ditch the rest in the bin.

All the airlines have security people who will have access to what your looking for, I doubt it will be highly likely they will grant access to the victim. Suggest you contact Jetstar, explain the situation and see if they can review the tape.

I would be asking to see Terminal Management who will have access to the security footage (if any in that area).
Jetstar will only rent gates in T2 SYD.

And there is a happy note/ending to this story.

Apparently, the story goes mum was helping another passenger with her baggage after being told for the 2nd time that her bags were overweight (Jetstar were being particularly thorny). In the hurry to get the bags repacked before the check in closed for that flight, the purse was scooped up with all the rest of the stuff. Fortunately, my business card was in her wallet so I got a call at work and a few text messages later, I'm hoping it will be registered posted back to my work by the end of the week.

So I've called the AFP and they won't be breaking this poor person's door down any time soon.

Good to see a Happy Ending to this :)
