Hi all,

Firstly, yes I have searched the forums and read about the horror stories involving these clowns and I have not paid them a cent. I did however decide to investigate.

I sent an e-mail message at about 23:15 one night containing a set of specific requests to AlphaFlightGuru with the following gist:

  • I plan to fly from MEL to MCO return in early 2016 (specific dates specified with flexibility emphasised)
  • My preference is to fly on either Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand or another Star Alliance member
  • I require that you confirm whether or not points/miles earn is afforded by your bookings
  • I require that you confirm whether or not status earn is afforded by your bookings
  • Please respond to these questions in writing by way of return e-mail, including any questions you have

At this point, I did not provide any contact details other than my e-mail address - no phone number was provided. (admittedly, the domain name is my full name).

At 08:00 the next day, I received a call (no Caller ID). The delay on the call indicated that the caller was either on another continent or the victim of an incredibly poor VoIP/SIP setup in Australia. The caller asked for me by name, identified themselves as being a representative from AlphaFlightGuru and proceeded to ask if it was an appropriate time to discuss my trip.

My response was a very direct (but courteous) statement around my initial questions, specifically what the answers to them were. The response was a completely disregarding "But we need to discuss your trip first."

I informed the caller that I found it inappropriate that they had both called me without me giving my mobile number and disregarded my requests and that I would require both responses to my initial questions and any further questions required to be provided in writing. The caller agreed and the call ended.

48 hours later I followed up via e-mail to indicate that I was unimpressed with the inability of the company to answer my questions in writing and their uninvited contact, specifically stating that they not contact me again in any way, shape or form unless they respond to my initial questions in writing. Although unsurprising in retrospect, this e-mail message received no response.

Exactly 4 weeks later, a Sydney number appeared on my mobile phone screen and I answered. Again, the caller identified themselves as being from AlphaFlightGuru asking about my planned trip (quoting dates and specific preferences).

When I made clear that I had made specific requests about responses in writing being provided via multiple means of communication as well as a direct statement of contact to not be made should such responses not being provided, the caller hung up.

Given the conduct of this company in terms of securing a sale, I challenge anyone to consider their services worthy of anything but exclusion from selection.

How did they get your mobile number? From your domain name?

Agree it is poor customer service.

Doesn't this mob use points to book tickets or something... meaning the tickets could easily be cancelled should the airline realize they were effectively onsold?

Yes, they did a whois lookup. That said, at no point did any of my requests experience any sort of recognition or response - either everyone working at the company is unable to read properly or is cognitively impaired.

That's my understanding of the company. They buy $2,500.00 worth of points just like any of us could, then make out that they somehow have exclusive access to these super low business and first class fares, sell unsuspecting people the fare for $5K to $6K or an amount around $1,000.00 less than the advertised retail level at the same time pocketing a tidy commission of around $3,000.00 per person.

The customer then thinks they've got a great deal because they've "saved" $1,000.00 per person and probably so starry eyed at the prospect that they haven't even realised at that point they won't receive any frequent flyer points on the booking.

The red flag should be that if these fares are so great then why isn't Australia's biggest travel retailer, Flight Centre, selling them?

If they answer those questions they lose a sale. Still not sure what they are trying to achieve with follow up calls.

They are applying politicians thinking, i.e. keep pushing the same message and hope you forget your previous misgivings.

I have a friend that works at the airport in Sydney and people are going to check in only to be told their ticket is fraudulent and has been cancelled

I did hear that Thai have cancelled a number of these tickets.

I don't know if they have changed their terms and conditions but they did have that the laws if california overide laws of the purchasers home country..or words to that effect

Not sure if the credit card companies would reverse a charge?

How are they still in business? That's a worry.

I'm one of those people that used them! Two years ago, SYD to YVR via LAX. It all worked perfectly for me at the time, but I was quite nervous about how shoddy it all seemed yet I still went ahead.

I booked about six weeks out from my departure date, saved about $2500 on the return trip from what I can recall. Was not interested in FF points/status points at the time so was only concerned with travelling in comfort.

Not even remotely advocating the service, but it did work for me. I see how it could so easily backfire if the airlines are cracking down on this kind of on selling as has been reported. From memory, the fare class was Z with VA.

Thought I would throw in my $0.02 - and FWIW I would not use this or another similar service again in future. Too much risk - not sure how I managed to convince myself to do it the first time actually.
