Previous Card holder - Anyway of still getting sign up bonuses?

There have been a few discussion on this i.e. 12 month waiting period before you can apply for the same card to get the bonuses. This is consistent across the board for AMEX issued cards.

Yep they seem very stringent on the 12 month waiting period. That's what I got done on in my examples above. No amount of pleasant negotiation was budging them, neither did the old hang up and call again trick (multiple times) or the escalation to the supervisor trick. It seems as though the rules are the rules when it comes to that and fair enough I guess - they did make it clear in the T&C's - my fault for not reading them carefully enough.

Hi Guys

Just a question regarding the bonus points.

Currently I am a Platinum edge cardholder after cancelling my Velocity Gold card two months ago. Thinking of signing up for the Velocity Platinum offer and wondering if the 12 month rule would be used even though the previous Velocity card was Gold rather than platinum?

Cheers

Not sure I'm familiar with the Velocity Gold card, is that an AMEX issued AMEX?

If it is then I wouldn't recommend it. AMEX didn't give me the bonus points a couple of years ago (so my info is a little dated) when I did something very similar. See post #98, on the previous page.

Cheers mate, the Gold is /was AMEX issued now obsolete.

Anyone else not get the points when swapping similar brand cards?

if you don't hold an existing Membership Rewards account of the type attached to the card you are opening you'll most likely get the bonus points.

I think this is interesting and a reasonable hypothesis. For your "Current Platinum Edge -> Applied for Platinum Charge = success, bonus points credited" did your existing Edge Ascent MR balance move to a Ascent Premium MR account and then you only had the 1 MR account? Or did they remain separate?

My existing points balance moved from Ascent to Ascent Premium once the Charge card was active. I think this should be standard practice (ie how it is meant to work) and AMEX have confirmed that to me when I emailed them, but I have seen at least one person post on here somewhere that they had two Ascent accounts (one normal and one premium). I think they contacted AMEX to get them combined into the Ascent Premium, but I can't remember the outcome.

I still have both of my ascent and ascent premium accounts as I was advised that they could not be merged. I was also told that I could credit my edge points to the ascent premium account only if I closed my ascent account (and transferred my points out within 30 days). As I do not plan to transfer to QF, I am not too worried at this stage about having both accounts.

Very strange indeed, but as you rightly point out the major difference between the two is the ability to transfer to QF. If that isn't a concern then I guess it is not worth worrying about.

I asked for them to be merged and all cards (edge, reserve and platinum charge) credit to ascent premium.
Weren't any restrictions at the time on moving ascent points to premium.

So in your case if you don't have another Ascent Premium account, which you most likely don't, I think you'll get the points - but I certainly wouldn't guarantee it.

This held true for me in the July/August refer-a-friend bonanza :)

Recently, someone confirmed receiving the 30,000 Platinum Edge points when they already hold the Velocity Platinum. I'm wondering if anyone has applied for the Platinum Edge card whilst holding the Platinum Charge card, and if the bonus points have credited in this scenario? I'm thinking they might not, as both these cards are part of the Ascent program.

EDIT: I seem to have found the answer (no bonus points credit in this scenario) in another thread in the referral section.

Just to let everyone know also that I did not received any bonus points signup with my Velocity Platinum given that I had previously held a Platinum Charge.

Sorry to hear that, are you 100% sure the points are not pending? I applied for a Velocity Plat in July (after picking up the Charge in April), and my points credited fine. Did your Velocity Card approval come recently? If so, sounds like they are definitely starting to enforce the 'no bonus points for existing cardholder' rule!

I checked my points summary and there's no bonus points awarded. There's meant to be a small bonus first then a large bonus but nothing.

I do not know if this has been reported elsewhere but the new 18 month 'no hold' period to qualify for the sign up bonus points now appears to apply to most cards, not just the new Explorer card.

I also note that the standard bonus for the Platinum Charge has reduced to 80k (my referral to 90k) and the spend requirement for the Platinum Edge has increased to $750.

Edit: I note that my PA Platinum Charge is still offering a 100k sign up bonus until 31 August.

I'm sorry to hear that too and it is certainly not what I would have expected (unless you have or have had a Velocity earning AMEX in the last 12 (now 18 months)).

I noticed that the other night, perhaps AMEX have made a system change along with the change from 12 to 18 months and are now rejecting these. Hopefully that isn't the case, but I guess we'll have to wait and see now.

I hope that is not the case, as I will be looking at getting more Amex sign up bonii in the future.
as a data point had a velocity platinum went to platinum edge and received the bonus
also Mrs radio has a velocity platinum and got the Qantas premium card and received the bonus, I will wait out the 12/18 months and try again for a velocity but in the mean time in theory could still try a Qantas card

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The bonus point is usually meant to offset the first year annual fee which is quite a common practice amongst other credit card issuers.

They still make 2% ish off the merchant and also late interest if you dont pay your card on time so if existing cardholders are not getting bonus and therefore not applying then ultimately the loss will be amex.

Just got the sign on bonus for the Plat Edge whilst still holding the Amex Velocity Escape and having cancelled the Amex Velosity Plat in May '16.
