I've received an interesting offer from United to buy status. In 2021 I only credited 2 flights to UA, earning 2 PQF and 2952 PQP which leaves me at the general tier however I've just received an 'invitation' to buy silver status for $703. I assume this is US$ so it's more like AU$977 for a year of United Silver status.

I'm curious if anyone else in Australia has got a similar offer given my offer looks cheap compared to others on flyertalk who are based in the US.

As a side note I'm not remotley intrested (maybe for $100-200 I'd consider it) as I've already locked in Air NZ *G through to 08/2023, QF Gold though to 02/2023 and VA Gold (no idea when this expires). I've used UA's program for crediting some of my more random flights but have never taken the program serious trying to achieve status. I've had some great redemptions from the program (all economy short haul flights) and am even more excited now that earning/burning on VA will be a possibility but I can't see UA Silver helping with that.

I didn’t go looking but I did see a mention of totally unrealistic offers being sent out. Even close to $1k for zero(?) benefit!

I didn’t receive an offer but I have flown UA metal for ages but I still have points going across from surveys.

My United Premier Gold status was extended for another year (silently) which was good, but thought I'd check out my Upgrade "offer" to Platinum. $6,700 USD to get UA Platinum which is certainly a hard pass given the only key difference between UA Platinum and Gold is 40 upgrade credits and the ability to book up to 8 passengers into Economy Plus seating. The former benefit isn't a huge benefit since you're looking at maybe 1 or 2 long-haul international flights upgraded with those credits which I certainly wouldn't value at $6,700 USD. The latter benefit doesn't really apply to me since I fly solo most of the time.

I reckon I'll use my Premier Gold this year whenever it makes sense, and let it lapse for 2023. Then next year I'll use a United status match to my QF Gold re-qualify back to Premier Gold for only 2000 PQP instead of the 8000 PQP usually required. That should be an easy ask since a trip from SYD to LHR can easily cost $2000 USD in J return between the cash fare component and the milage co-pay to secure the upgrade.

I'm also gold and got the offer to "buy up" to Platinum. My offer is USD7,346 (over $10k in AUD) which there is no way I'll be taking up.

And to put that upgrade offer in some context for others, you can literally purchase several long haul upgrades on UA during OLCI for that amount. Indeed, on my last trip on UA from LHR to SYD (via LAX) I did a milage upgrade for 35,000 miles + $550 USD co-pay (since I was on a $900 USD cheap return K fare) and that got me United Polaris lie flat seating on a 787 for 27 hours plus 5 hours at the Polaris lounge in LAX. Not bad!
