Hi there
Just wondering if anyone has had first hand experience with this question.

Verbally told by Air NZ that we get 2 x 7kg cabin luggage allowance plus a personal item - i.e lap top bag, hand bag.

I was surprised when I heard that, as when I recently checked on the Air NZ site, it does say for International Flights on Prem Econ that you get the 2 x 7kgs BUT at the end of the cabin luggage list it does say exception is when travelling to/from the USA and in these cases only 1 x 7kg cabin luggage allowance. (also in small writing that any flights on codeshare would be 1 x 7kgs also) - ours aren't codeshare (phew)

So I'm not sure now - do I go by what I was verbally told (but no written proof) or do I go by what is on the website (and it is still on the website Cabin Baggage - Baggage - Travelling - Air New Zealand - Australia Site

I'll be travelling with medicine bottles so they add up in weight when they are full of liquid so I'm thinking that the 2 x 7kgs would be nice, and of course helps for the trip back!

I don't want to get to the airport and find that I'm over packed at the Airport - want to do the right thing.

Thank you (flying out in about 2 weeks - so just want to get the right answer prior to attending at the airport ready to depart)

The USA have regulation that PAX on flights from/to/within the USA are only permitted 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item.

This is outside of the control of the airlines other than enforcing the USA regulation.

The same issues occur for Qantas flights to/From the USA as well.

The "personal Item" can be a handbag, purse, laptop case camera case etc.

The specific rules for Air NZ are as you have found. (Air New Zealand - Cabin Baggage)

  • Business Class, Premium Economy* and Star Alliance Gold customers (including Airpoints Gold and Gold Elite) are permitted two pieces of cabin baggage each with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 118cm (46.5").
  • Exception: Only one piece is permitted for travel to, through or from USA.

In addition to your allowance, you may also carry on board one small personal item such as a handbag, slimline laptop or duty free goods (where permitted). As a safety precaution, all cabin baggage must be able to fit in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you.

Thanks for that - I think perhaps she read from the website, but maybe didn't see the exception test - we had spoken about both legs of our flight, and she was aware we were travelling to US - probably just an oversight on her part. Just wanted to check before I went and arranged 2 cabin bags each.

Have a great day.
