Hi there

I fly SYD SIN BKK SIN SYD next week with SG - been a looong time since I've been flying SG. Ticket is booked in Y class (W fare).

I entered my UA ff# - I'm UA Gold - and then tried to select preferred seats but the web site still wants to charge me for the privilege...

I was under the impression Preferred seats allocation was free for Star Alliance Gold members but perhaps this is indeed not the case?
Can somebody help to clarify the above.

Many thanks

Preferred seating is not a *Gold benefit.

pay up! SQ couldn't care less about Star Golds (or even Krisflyer golds), hence you can't even have a shower at SIN and you are segregated from the real business class passengers with seperate lounges for pesky economy class star golds.

I'm a Krsiflyer Gold and earlier this year I selected a preferred seat in Y class on the A380, LHR to SIN. The pop-up window indicated that I would be charged so I accepted and confirmed the preferred seat. If I recall correctly, the pop-up indicates that it will charge the card that the booking was made with, so I didn't need to enter any further details. After that I was done I don't recall seeing a charge for it in my statement, just for the initial flight booking.

Maybe it was just my lucky day (flight)!

Preferred seating is not a benefit of any status - be it PPS, Krisflyer Gold or Star Gold. You (unless lucky, like AzzaAus who may have lucked in on the ever so problematic SQ website). $50 USD per sector. Same situation over at QF where WP's & SG's need to pay for exit rows as well these days (at $80 or more per sector)
