Hi AFF,
Made an account especially for this so I hope someone can give some help.

Im planning a trip with some mates to Taiwan (Taipei or Taichung) on 28th Jan to 16th Feb 2015, departing from Auckland. I have 100k points with qantas ff that I can use towards flights. The problem I have is the return flight, where qantas doesn't offer any classic rewards flights until the 24th which is much too late.

Questions;
Are there ways to get around the unavailability and get flights with qantas on the date I want using my Classic rewards points?
Can I transfer points to other one world members such as Cathay to fly with them who have an abundance of flights that day?

Any help will truly be appreciated. I am very confused by the systems so some clarification would help.

Cheers, Oscar.

You can use your Qantas points to book award flights on Cathay, but you can't do it online - you have to call up Qantas and pay the assisted booking fee.

.

Do you have status with qantas (Gold or higher) if not then qantas seats release is probably NO.

You can try to call up as some airlines like JAL and Maylasian do not come up in the online search.

Have you tried to use the multicity tool to check for flights? bounce through a oneworld hub.

I am assuming you are seeing rewards seats on cathays website direct using their points? if so qantas will not have the same access to reward flights (sort of like qantas releasing all the seats to all their one world partners at the expense of qantas points holders - we would be a little annoyed) - and no you can't shift qantas points to another airline points account

Alright, I have bronze, kinda pathetic rewards wise. In the qantas+ partners I can see flights for my there trip on the 28th with cathay, but there arent any available flights on the way back. I havent looked at rewards on the cathay website, I was just assuming they would have flights due to the abundance on the the 16th. Is it guaranteed to get a booking if I ring up qantas and ask to book on cathay?

Tough time to get to/from Asia considering Chinese New Year is 19th February.

There may be some availability on MH via KUL. I'll have a look.

EDIT: Yes, this could be an option. You would probably need to make your own way from TPE-KUL

But can qantas ff points be used in that flight?

Yes, you can also use them on MH but you need to call, and I suspect it would be the best choice.

Yes, you should be able to look that up on the Qantas site.

You can also supplement that fare with a separately purchased ticket on Air Asia TPE-KUL for about $171
