Fares to MNL available for a few days on the Philippine Airlines website, especially on the newly altered A333s from SYD and MEL represent pretty good value (though the J class one is not as good as the stellar 'beyond MNL' A$1200 return promotion of a few months ago from which a few AFFers supped):
The Y fares are cheaper from SYD than they are from MEL, reflecting how two other airlines run nonstop to Philippines from Sydney but no others from Melbourne. The J class fares are slightly cheaper from MEL which while proving how Melbourne Airport's charges are less than Sydney Airport's may also demonstrate how there tend to be more higher yield passengers from Sydney.
Mind you, when I travelled from MEL within the last few months and had a friend travel from SYD also on this airline, the MEL-orgin and destination J cabin was fuller in both directions than the SYD flights - but that's only a very small sample.
By calling or emailing a specialist travel agent one may get A$30 or so off the Y fares, and perhaps a tad more off the J return fares.
The fares to other destinations (Y only) don't all look to be super cheap but I haven't researched what other legacy airlines are typically charging.
