Possible to upgrade friend?

I'm looking at travelling to NY later this year on W with a friend. Is it possible to request an upgrade for us both to J or are Qantas pretty stringent with the eligible family member requirement? Not sure how'd you prove someone was your aunt / cousin etc anyway.

Lol, definite long shot that's for sure but no harm in trying! I'm sure W will be bearable.

I was just curious about how they check eligibility. Never been questioned before doing upgrades but then my travel partner had the same surname.
