Looking at flying BNE/LAX/DEN on VA/DL in January.

If you put in BNE/DEN into various sites it says via SYD

But both VA & DL SYD/LAX arrive at 6.05am & 6.15am & it says can connect to DL 1228 at 7.59am (which seems very tight, but is legal), but the BNE/LAX arrives at LAX at 6.05am, 5 days a week, seemingly into same terminal, but won’t connect.

Am I missing something or is it indeed a error in system ?

It would appear that Delta has a special lower MCT at LAX for SYD arrivals.

I believe this is because the SYD arrivals are guaranteed a jetbridge into the terminal whilst BNE arrivals are sometimes (or always?) forced to a remote gate.

These are DL rules not necessarily the same for VA, but this means that MCT for SYD arrivals are 1:30 and BNE arrivals are 1:45. Still, the 1:54 should be ok I'd think, unless VA also has unique (but different) MCT for SYD vs BNE.

If I were you, if I didn't have luggage I'd book the tickets separately. If you are checking luggage this connection is too tight anyway...

International - Domestic: 1 hour 25 minutes if your connection is T2-T3, T3-T2, T2-TBIT, T3-TBIT, or TBIT-TBIT; 1 hour 45 minutes if your connection is TBIT-T2 or TBIT-T3.
Exceptions:
  • If you're coming from a Canadian airport with preclearance, it is considered a domestic arrival for MCT purposes and the domestic - domestic connection times above apply.
  • If you're on one of the following combinations of flights, the MCT is 1 hour 30 minutesfor an international-domestic connection:
    • Arriving from AMS on any flight if the first flight arrives into TBIT and the second flight leaves from T2 or T3.
    • Arriving from BZE on DL 658 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from CDG on any flight if the first flight arrives into TBIT and the second flight leaves from T2 or T3.
    • Arriving from GDL on DL 668 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from GUA on DL 387 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from HND on any flight if the first flight arrives into TBIT and the second flight leaves from T2 or T3.
    • Arriving from LIR on DL 691 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from MZT on DL 736 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from PVG on any flight if the first flight arrives into TBIT and the second flight leaves from T2 or T3.
    • Arriving from SYD on any flight if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from ZIH on DL 644 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.
    • Arriving from ZLO on DL 647 if it comes into TBIT, no matter what terminal the second flight departs from.

But wouldn't you think va & dl would adjust their timings slightly ?

Colorado is a major destination from oz in northern winter

If it only affects BNE, possibly not. They are still two different airlines and DL has many other feeder flights to consider beyond a 5x weekly. The timing of this flight is likely based on many factors... BNE is probably pretty low on that list.

Often LAX can be really slow and difficult to get thru immigration but yesterday both of us were thru processing in about 10 minutes.
My priority bag was almost last to appear on the baggage carousel and that was when about 25 passengers were left from a near full 777. I would always go 3 hours between onwards flights.

lots of high yield traffic fly BNE/COLORADO. Seems very strange that this wouldn't connect. Surely VA could get DL to move the flight 1/2 hour. VA needs all the business it can get.

If you say so, I don't know how you could prove that statement. I'm sure there is some high yield traffic BNE-DEN, but how it compares to the total premium DEN traffic, it seems unlikely to be near the top. BNE doesn't have enough premium traffic for VA to even have a daily flight.

DEN wouldn't even be the biggest airport destination for snowbirds this time of season (that would be SLC). And if premium ski/snow traffic wanted to go to Colorado, ASE and EGE are much nicer options for most high-end resorts than a long drive from DEN. Have you looked to see if other Colorado airports would suit your needs?

This sounds like a case of 'I want it, so it should be important'.

VA doesn't have enough B777-300ERs for daily.

Out of BNE to west coast only 2 airlines nonstop.

Out of SYD, QF, VA, DL, AA, UA + daily direct FJ & NZ.

Think you'll find many more skiers go to Colorado than Utah. Colorado is the most popular destination by far for OZ skiers.

Only very small aircraft fly LAX/ASE these days. 70 seaters I think it is.

DEN to Breck, Keystone, Copper about 90 mins. 20 mins more to Vail/Beaver.

EGE is a fantastic airport, but very few flights cf. DEN.

so if 1 hour 50, why doesn't BNE/LAX arriving at 0605 & LAX/DEN at 0759 connect legally ?

This is a good question. Have you tried calling VA to book your preferred route?

Think you'll find many more skiers go to Colorado than Utah. Colorado is the most popular destination by far for OZ skiers.

I think I've found that your assumption that your route is the 'most important' is stronger than I first expected! Yes, there are bigger resorts in Colorado. But we are talking about SLC vs DEN. And as already stated, there are better airports than DEN to access the popular ski resorts in Colorado.

Only very small aircraft fly LAX/ASE these days. 70 seters I think it is.

So? It's still the better option compared to DEN. These 70 seaters still have F cabin and premium pax will be after the closest airport possible.

I don't believe it is MCT. I think it is availability.

Doing some searches I saw a couple of BNE-LAX-DEN's in I class.

I checked the 7 days around 15th January outbouand and only saw Q class on the 18th.

I think ASE closes at the drop of a hat. EGE stays open longer am led to believe as military use it. Largest commercial aircraft are 757s IIRC

Not sure I understand. I thought you wanted to arrive mid-day, not midnight. Is a 757 too small for you? Quite confused.

Want cheap to LAX (ie VA) & use VA ff pts LAX/DEN (plenty available, but none LAX/ASE) or cheap BNE/LAX/DEN . Do not want to go via SYD
