Hi all, my understanding is that the chances are slim on this, but I thought that I would ask to see if anyone else has had luck.

I am flying (with partner) from MEL-SYD-LHR Friday next week (QF1). I am Platinum and Partner is Gold. We are flying on 'Sale' fares.

I have already been sent the 'bid to upgrade' email for the MEL-SYD leg, but haven't seen anything for the SYD-LHR leg. I cant find anywhere on my ticket where it tells me what fare bucket we fall into either...

Has anyone had any luck upgrading from Sale Y to Y+? Or Sale Y to J? and what tricks have they used?

Whilst I am WP, I only ever fly domestically, economy... so I am unsure of WP treatment for QFi flights and processes. Have attached the current ExpertFlyer stats on our flight below.

Feel free to knock this on the head... or if you have any tips... please let me know!

I have upgraded with points from discount Y to J-Sydney to LA before as gold QF, update came through night before take off.

cheers

Are you able to request an upgrade in manage my booking on this fare? I understand the "bid to upgrade" only goes out after all the requested upgrades have been processed and I would not hold my breath on QF1 99% of the time.
BTW my requested upgrade success on QF1/2 as a WP is 6/6 in the past 2 years.

I can't request an upgrade with points. Says 'fare type not eligible'.

If you can't request the upgrade for the fare type, then no upgrade I am afraid. That's the risks with the sale fare - good $ value but with no upgrade opportunity!

In my experience, usually sale fares are not upgradeable. However red e deals are. The terms and conditions in the fare rules will outline what is permissible. Interestingly fare rules do change, so it always pays to review them carefully at the point of sale.

Master FM is traveling LAX-SYD return. LAX-SYD was sale and wouldn't allow an upgrade request. SYD-LAX was saver and would and his J upgrade has just come through at 24 hours prior to departure. He is silver.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If you go into Manage My Bookings, on the QF website, first go to your bookings, then click the date of the flight in question, click "manage", go down to flight click on the time of travel, click the down arrow for the pull down menu, look at details on the right, you will see status and then travel class, within the booking in question, down the right hand side, you will see the class of travel.
Do not look at the printed paper eticket itineary, it would not be on that.
I can see the class of my 3 next travels, by doing it.

I booked a Sale Y fare LAX-MEL when I was WP (end of 2012).

Received an email from QF a few days out inviting me to upgrade, noting that this would not normally be the case (it didn't say why they were making an exception).

Upgrade to J was confirmed about 48 hours out from the flight.

I assumed this was because Y/Y+ was full and/or premium cabins were significantly undersold.

Occasionally Qantas sends out an email offering upgrade requests from discount fare buckets. Haven't seen one in a while.

I was on QF1 a couple of years ago booked in on a sale fare. I was just randomly checking the upgrade availability a few days before the flight and the option to request was there one day when previously it hadn't been an option. I requested it and got the upgrade so was pretty happy with that.

If you check back regularly on the build up to the flight you might get lucky?

No go guys...

No offer, no ability to upgrade through QF.

I'll try my luck at a cash offer at the Dubai first lounge... That usually does the trick.
