Poor quality special meal in QF J class

Is this the same trip on which the OP was given an OPUP to first for the LAX-SYD leg? And your post didn't mention that you were in F for that leg, not J.If so, why whinge about only being offered only $100. Be thankful for getting what most of us here, with higher status, only dream about.
I don't agree with you, i was upgraded to F at last minute at gate but meal still was J and FA went to J to get my special meal from J to F.Infact flight attendant was apologetic looking at meal he actually suggested I write Qantas so some one makes an effort to improve in future. If you are happy to travel hungry with op ups than good luck I did not ask for upgrade I would rather have decent food on 14 hour flight. It is nice to get upgrade but food is imp too u can't have best seat and worst food it would not make overall experience better.I would avoid Qantas if other options like SQ available. If SQ is permitted to fly Transpacific than will be interesting to see which airlines does better. It is my mistake I tried to compare what I felt was standard on SQ! If you don't give them feedback than how would they improve? I am more unhappy with their complaint handling rather than food. This is my opinion and may be you got consistently better food on QF !

Just to pipe in with a domestic upgrade experience where I'd asked for kids meals. They offered to bring up the kids meals from economy, but I asked for one J meal and the youngest kid had the Y kids meal. I'm not sure what the issue was and I'd be surprised that they didn't have enough in either the J or F cabin. But then my experience was only domestic.

If you are on a 738 in J they only have a very small number of meals loaded (usually a salad type meal and a hot option) and if too many ask for one or another they run out, not much better on 763 flights, they frequently run out of one of the options by the time they get toward the rear of the J cabin. Quite pathetic really at the price but that's the way the airline is run. Fancy paying $2800 for a return ticket to CNS and being told you only can have a salad for lunch because you chose row 3. :( and just bad :!:

Domestic J catering (I know can be poor for the price of the ticket) and International long haul J/F catering are very different in my experience.

Here is a very recent long haul J selection. Starter and main pics, generous and substantial (and dessert/cheeses etc followed). Starter is King prawns, main is chicken breast:

I've done F MEL-LAX on the A380 also and find it hard to believe that vegetarian options would be hard to find. The food section was pretty impressive.

I was probably unlucky and may be not looking at alternative options (ie standard menu) in greater detail. Having said that food was good on A380 SYD LAX but mixed with meat due to some error probably in catering department so not bad quality there but error how it was packed by flight kitchen I guess. Flight crew's were very efficient and really good cabin service otherwise apart from issue with meal. I wanted to ask others if they have similar experience with special meal as I have not flown with Qantas in J cabin internationally prior to this trip.

That food looks very ordinary and from my extensive experience usually tastes pretty ordinary too. Do you think that is impressive for your $12,000 return ticket to LA? I don't.

I do think that some QF J class breakfasts (long-haul breakfasts prior to landing) can be a bit rubbish however! (continental only... but at least can be quicker to serve!)

It was better than most of my many SQ J-class (and even a couple of SQ F-class) experiences.

SQ sometimes offer the 'refeshment' on long haul J and it's just rubbish (a bit like QF domestic).

They had enough J meals for all of us. Point was they offered to drag up the ordered sspecial meal from Y. I find the quality to be just fine on domestic.

my last special Gluten Free meal in J on MH - SYD-KUL was atrocious. tomato passata on everything, it was a mixture of chicken dishes with tomato or vegetarian...............it was awful. i did it as a sort of experiment to see what it was going to be like. coming home MH KUL-SYD, in J, the FA said,
"oh you're the GF person, oh i've got bad news we don't have much of a meal for you, but we do have the rice cakes............." i was so relieved, i said "great news, as the GF menu was disgusting anyway" didn't have any reaction to the meals, and had the rice cakes instead of bread, which is what i normally do anyway.

can understand when sometimes have not had GF meals due to late upgrades, but one time when flying QF PVG-SYD in Economy which had been booked for months, they had no meal for me. i had rung 3 times in the proceeding weeks to check, even with it being as part as my FF status. double checked on check=in at PVG, "Yes Ms KLN, we have the special meal for you"...............absolutely nothing. had a couple of cold prawns and lettuce. i told the FA, "just bring me a couple of bottles of wine, and i'll be asleep soon".
