pointless duty free

But what about Bundy. (The world drink.....)

Interesting how times change. On our honeymoon in 1984, in tassie, going out thru 'hell's gates'...bloody cold, the boss and I thought we'd have a warming rum. Asked our waitress..' Certainly sir, but it's only bundaberg rum'. Of course the reply from a Dyed in the wool queenslander was' ok, I suppose that will be ok':D:D:D

Rum is a pretty basic drink, granted. But I cannot think of any rum I'd want to drink before Bundy. I'm making a distinct between rum and whiskeys in saying that.

In other news aelia duty free in Adelaide screwed me on the price claiming the UP rum was 2 for $59 not the OP. Just fired off an email with the screenshot of their website showing OP listed in the 2 for $5 offer, asking for an $9 refund.

Slight typo there medhead - I think you meant 2 for $50.

On your subject of rum being a pretty basic drink, have to disagree though the reason won't make Queenslanders happy.

Each mid-December since 1999 a group of my friends meet in North London for our Christmas do. We bring Christmas munchies including a huge fantastic Christmas cake to die for (feeds up to 40).

The choice of tipple to go with it soon evolved to neat rum (it's damn cold over there that time of the year).

One of the lads visits Cuba a few times of the year and brings back their good stuff.

Being a proud Aussie import (over 60% of my life here), I took up the challenge to top his rum with a Bundy.

Last year ear I took the Port Barrel Special Limited Edition. Cost $80 a bottle through DM special order.

NB: Bought 2 as I had to try it and check it myself first - lovely and worthy to challenge.

Result?

Beaten by a 15yo Special Reserve Cuban rum.

Conceded defeat eat for about the 8th year in a row and had to buy the first round at the pub once again.

NB: these excellent aged Cuban rums are available at UK supermarkets for ridiculously cheap prices.

Can a Queenslander visiting Cuba or even a UK please pick up a bottle and take it to Bundy and let them know that is the benchmark they have to beat.

Whoops. Yes, I see, now. I'm still sleep deprived. They charged me the single bottle price for a total cost of $68. The $9 is the different to $59.

Personally I am not keen on taking DF on board an aircraft and prefer to buy in Aust. I usually buy on the way out and collect on the way back in. Some DF outlets offer a discount if you do this. Last week I bought 2 JW red 1.25 litre for $58. Try to get this deal at Dan Murphys. As for electronics, cameras etc you can get better deals at Harvey Norman on on line from Kogan.

Hot off the press; Duty free prices for BKK and HKG comparedto Dan’s website which I gathered today. The important point here is the dutyfree are all 1 litre bottles, whereas Dan’s are 700ml, so I did an “arguable”extrapolation to a I litre equivalent. Certainly some big savings there! Apologies to the Bundy drinkers, but I justcould not find any, must have all sold out!!!!

Yep. Agreed. Buying wine at the airport is strictly for the tourists who are either too stupid or too time poor to visit any bottle-shop.

But I picked up 2 litres of Bowmore Enigma for $99 last time I bought duty free at Sydney. Dan Murphy's doesn't have that variant online, but their price for the standard 12yo malt is $77 .... for 0.7 litres. That's the equivalent of $220 for 2 litres, so more than double the price.

When I want to have a scotch and coke there are better options than JW ...

SIN duty free is generally cheaper when it comes to prestige label champagnes. And some whiskies (saved $20 on a 1L bottle of Ardbeg). Also BNE duty free had the Taittinger CDC at $100 less than DM's, same with the LGD 2004 that just arrived to replace the La Grande Annee.

Duty free is also handy when purchasing alcohol as gifts for friends or rellies overseas as I can't be coughd stuffing everything into checked baggage to comply with LAG rules.

Ive been looking for a 1ltr Emerald Royal Salute (to complete my 1ltr collection) for a while and finally found it at Changi, checked all three terminals and finally found one bottle in the wrong spot so was very happy with the find and price.

You can also usually get things in a nice fancy box, which isn't the norm when buying from a regular store

Yes. I bought a bottle of Wild Turkey rare in a really nice presentation box for $139 and its now selling for $400 to collectors.

My problem is I buy the bottles that appreciate in value but I cant seem to actually sell them yet.

I have never seen any spirits cheaper at any Australian liquor store over a duty free store.

I have seen cheaper in Aust but it is rare...my example is that occasionally DMs and First Choice have a special on a 700mil bottle of XO Courvoisier for $99...must be some type of grey import to get to that price as DF in Australia are around $150.

The issue here in Aust is simply that any liquor store chain has to pay duty plus tax and GST on sprits at a very high level e.g. whisky is 5% duty + $60.92 per litre of alcohol +10% GST at cost, so with Scotch having an alcohol content of around 40%it is pretty rich.
The fact that occasionally DM's get close to the DF pricesometime when they have a red hot special is surprising...must be a lossleader.

The issue here in AU is that while the local DF operators are no doubt paying huge rents to the likes of Macquarie Airports but no doubt their margins are excessive as they would pay little to no tax at wholesale ...the bottom line is that DF liquor is generally much cheaper in Singapore , Bangkok, Dubai etc or from the local liquor store in the USA.

Thanks leadman :)

Now if only I could fly back from LHR to PER via BKK or HGK with QF :(

will check prices for these at Tesco, Sainsbury and LHR International in a few weeks time.

My favourite malt at present is Bruichladdich :)

Ok. Just been asked to pick up JW Blue Label for someone. The only option is to buy in Sydney on return from HKG, as I don't check luggage. Quick searching just now turned up $208 for 750ml from SYD duty free. $160 delivery special or $190 in store for 700ml from Dan Murphy's.

Tell them to have it delivered from Dan M...$160 is a red hot price for JW Blue!
