Pointless accumulating points?

I haven't bothered about points for years, not since a string of rejections for int upgrades even though I was WP and staff profusely apologised 'the J cabin is half empty but the computer still says no'.

I don't have the kind of predictable life where I can make points bookings 350+ days ahead and be confident of making the trip, so being able to make an F booking for 11+ months time has no attraction for me.

There is some utility in amassing status credits to retain OWE but I wouldn't bother with it for only QF WP status.
It seems the days are long gone when the FA manager could just move you into business of his own accord. It seems only P1s are routinely upgraded at check in or at the gate. Is there any reason why the FA can’t move an elite passenger to J after take off?

I’m still accumulating points, and I have booked numerous domestic class reward seats during the last twelve months. I currently hold reward bookings for my son and myself PER-MEL Y return in January, PER-CNS J in January, HBA-PER in October, DRW-PER in September, and three one way flights between BME and PER in September and October. So accumulating and using points is still very much an enjoyable hobby for me!

After some maths involving expenditure, and rates of accumulation, I decided that my card points were unlikely to ever accumulate to a worthwhile level any time soon, so basically I’m now out of that game entirely. Used the points today and will cancel the card in the next month or so. I still have some points left in SQ, I’ll have to see if I can give them to a friend who lives there.

Yes, I'm still collecting points too (have well over half a million), but it's extremely frustrating not to be able to use them productively.

Over the last couple of months I've had to cancel many reward bookings for obvious reasons.

Living in WA would have some advantages in that regard...

Was recently having a conversation with a mate who lives overseas. Both of us chase points and status. Travel is becoming a lot easier for him now that Covid is being dealt with but it’s still a slow process for us over here. Got me thinking if anyone has thrown in the towel or considering it in terms of accumulating points and keeping up with the latest offers. Do people here feel that their large stash of QF points could be severely devalued or wiped altogether due to the struggling industry? I wouldn’t commit the ultimate sin of converting to gift cards or appliances but I’m sure many have due to all the uncertainty. Do people here feel their points balances are pretty safe due to the current situation?

Yes.

Next question?

Just read the LA Times and the Delta strain has started to rage thru Los Angeles. Unvaccinated folks are getting infected in big numbers so we won’t be flying there in the next 12 months. Our points/miles to go there won’t be used for quite awhile.
AA has announced they are suspending flights between Australia and the US.

still collecting.
still putting in redemptions for 12 months in future.. lets see if it happens.
small amount of $ to risk which I can handle.

tried looking at various gadgets to buy with points but none of them excite me to begin with, then I look at the points price and its a double whammy :(

And this morning our toaster is on its way out!
Time to put some points to use lol

I watch the Woolies and BP specials so have accumulated a reasonable (for me) number of points.... They are useful in keeping the overall tally at a usable/stable level. Managed to get son back on an award flight from Alice Springs when his original routing was through MEL with a stopover.

I wonder when QF will consider that there might be a lot more interest in non-flying accumulation of status credits?
For those of us, without the credit card spend to consider Points Club.....
There are a lot of dark places found when wandering

Thanks for all the comments. It's good to see people are still in the game whilst its hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As others have mentioned I also converted all the velocity points to KF with the intention to use them on a first class trip to India in May 2020. That obviously never eventuated. I've got ~650k flybuys points as well which for the time being I feel is safer to leave there than to convert to velocity, especially when we don't know what sort of international options there will be down the track. Supermarket loyalty programs are probably safer for the time being considering the way people shop at the sniff of a lockdown...
With FB, there is no expiry, and/ergo/ie no loss.
With QFF, so long as there is activity, there is also no loss/expiry, and its its easy to keep points alive.
Now, with SQ's KF, and your haul is "huge", and you might "probably" loose them, and as well as/99.9% of hotel membership programs, where points do expire, I agree, its pointless to accumulate them, and then have them expire.
OT: for Rydges's PGR program, I usually read all emails, they said they did email out notices that points will be extended for a while, then will expire, but I don't think I got that email, so yep, for PGR and my ALL Accor, they both lost points.
PGR reinstated them, and I didn't make a fuss in ALL Accor's case, but with so many restrictions in regards to travel, and pain in the bum to fly and then have to quarantine for certain states, in "some" circumstances, not worth it accumulating points, is a good adage.

I got the email saying that Rydges will start expiring points soon, but checked my account and some had already expired. Have deprioritised Rydges.

Yes we had better look at using our Marriott and Intercontinental hotel points.
Have activity with Virgin and Qantas so those points are ok.
Our AA miles are still active as we still use our US credit cards.

Mrsdron is the one in our family with an Accor account. We were tired of trying to use them with Accor so had them automatically transfer to AA.stops her losing ALL points and keeps her AA account active.

Not sure about IHG but have used Marriott transfers to keep some of my FF points alive. From memory quite easy to keep IHG points alive, and when we are allowed to travel very useful.

Do Hilton points expire? I made diamonds with VA platinum perk and my last stay was in Adelaide a couple months ago. Only have a small stash of ~85k points but wouldn’t mind using them for a night in the Hilton tel Aviv when I’m back.

With the lockdown in Sydney all my upcoming travels have been cancelled. Over the last yr or so I have attempted several times to redeem QFFs on flights but they have had to be cancelled every time due to COVID. I just recently decided to swap my primary credit card and made the most of a recent ANZ card promotion. I am keeping the Woolworths conversion to QFF to keep them alive and will hopefully swap back to a QFF credit card at some point next year.
Too much uncertainty for me atm for it to be worthwhile investing in points I can't seem to use

With more than 2 million QF and 3 million Sq points, I accumulate points if I can get them for nothing but won't pay any credit card surcharges to do so. I stopped credit card sign ups but am tempted with signing up for the Amex Explorer for
+1 to get 175K Amex points and me 50K points as the referrer. With Sydney's extended lockdown I will be happy if I can just go our for dinner, never mind even a domestic flight! I hope to take an international flight sometime in 2023/4!

I have kept my IHG points alive by buying a minimal amount, which IIRC cost about $27 last time.
You can do that with IHG,
OT on: but not with PGR/ALL Accor ie, can't buy points.
A lot of the cheaper hotels in ALL Accor in ADL have become Covid "medi hotels", and the only 2 that have not, is one at Gepps, "eeugh" and the one in the Hills, too pricey $$$$$.
For PGR, its the Oval $$$$ as it is, it was also a Covid hotel for the cricket team, and the Rydges on West Tce is also rated eeugh by TripAdvisor, ADL Airport's Atura, is good, but just because I booked a discounted rate via a link to their website, via some sort of voucher, also not counted as activity.
OT off.
... 3 million Sq points, ...
Wow, hopefully SQ do keep doing their FF extension for a while till you can use it.
